Topic: RE: Food we are not supposed to eat...............
Hi. What I have learned thru my successes and failures is that if I totally deny myself, THAT is when the first chance I get to eat something "bad". I think that we (as WLS patients) need to learn portion control and it starts with allowing a LITTLE of the bad stuff. I don't eat it every day or every week, but I don't totally deprive myself either. I think that this is something that really helps me.
Topic: RE: What is your exercise routine now?
Hi Mitzi. I do a combination of step aerobics and toning classes, plus, I walk on treadmill and walk as much as I can. I also do resistance training with weights and elastic bands that are used for toning. I think for me, the combination of cardio workouts, plus keeping moving thru walking (both on the treadmill and walks around my home area) are such a key to my overall success. I started working out from the beginning of January 2004 (I had had my RNY on 11/17/03) and now I religiously get to workout 4-5 times per week. It is truly a part of my life and I feel great since I have incorporated this into my lifestyle. Hope this helps. By the way, I go to my local YWCA and this is a great place to go to because the cost is not that high and you get a lot for your money. Take care!

Hello again, Cara! Gee, I just noted that our surgery date is the same. I think everyone slides in something they know is a bad choice now and then. We have to be careful not to fall into our old habits.
On the go stuff? I keep a box of assorted protein bars in my desk, along with the little mini-tubs of Hormel chili. Also, the Jack Links nuggets are really good and have less fat than Slim Jims. The grease in slim jims makes me sick. The thing to remember is that the more fat, the more calories. If you have to eat something, make it something good. I also keep carb control yogurt in the fridge here at the office for sweet cravings.
If I am having head hunger, I get a big glass of tea or lemonade. Tropicana makes a terrifc light lemonade that has only 5 calories in it.

I do Curves three times a week plus two other cardio sessions, which can be going swimming with my nieces, walking on my treadmill, mowing the lawn, or walking all over Dollywood. I like Curves because it is efficient--you get both strength-building and cardio in 30 minutes. What do you mean by "just not getting it now"? You can always increase the intensity by pushing the machines faster.

Topic: What is your exercise routine now?
I'm thinking about joining the gym close to where I work and going during lunch. I was doing Curves and its just not getting it now. I need some more Cardio plus major toning......
I just wanted to see what you all were doing and what you enjoy doing.
Thanks
Mitzi

Topic: RE: I'm very discouraged
Hi Belinda. I think that you should try to change some things, starting with the amount of protein. That seems like a lot to me, but maybe not. I have found that when we plateau, our body has adjusted to the changes, so we need to "trick" it by doing some different things. So, try to eat less protein-maybe 40-60 g per day. Then, I cannot stress enough HOW IMPORTANT EXERCISE IS! It has made all the difference for me and I know it without a doubt. You need to get yourself into a routine where you get at LEAST 30 minutes of exercise in a day 3-4 times a week. Gradually increase the frequency and time and over time, it WILL make a huge difference, not only in overall weight loss, but energy level, metabolism (which controls weight loss), and how we feel overall. You cannot make excuses that you don't have time, but you are making time for everyone else but YOU!. Remember, you did this surgery to get healthier, so making exercise a part of your life and routine is part of it. Hang in there and think about what I suggested but definitely, you need to change something to make your weight loss go better for you. Take care...

Thanks so much for the ideas. I did know about Slim Jim's, but I think that I'll keep a couple in my desk drawer at work.

I don't feel that there are foods that are taboo, but there are some that will just make me feel ill. Sweets are one of them. I find myself grazing from time to time too, usually when I have not had enough water or protein. For some reason if I have cheese or some fluid, the urge to graze goes away.
I carry slim jims. No refridgeration and high in protein. I get them at the dollar store near me. String cheese is good, but can get a little icky when not kept cold. I am not a fan of jerky (some are) but I heard that this is good too. I hate protein bars so I don't use them.
Fast food? Wendy's chili or Taco Bell pinto's and cheese. V-8 juice doesn't really have protein, but I love it when I get sick of diet whatever and it is good for you. Hershey's has sugar free chocolate milk that isn't bad either for a quick pick me up.
Topic: Food we are not supposed to eat...............
Hello all,
Do you guys ever eat something that we are not supposed to eat????Maybe a small slice of cake, or 1 cookie??? I am fighting with this head hunger, and have found myself eating everything in sight. Now, It is not as much as I would have eaten before, but it's all the wrong stuff. Any ideas how to fight this head hunger, and any ideas on some good, high protein foods to eat. I am always on the go, so this is an issue too! Thanks for your thoughts.
Cara
PS. I had surgery on 11/24/03, and am down 118+ lbs.
