My Dr prefers Lap band over RNY

Hi to all, I enjoy the message board and forums, but I have a question. Why have all the people on the IL Lap band forum have had RNY surgery? I always choose Lap band and IL........but most of the people who have posted answers have had the RNY................ My Dr says he prefers Lap band because it is safer and at the 5 year out mark bath Lap band and RNY have the same results.  The RNY's usually loose faster, but with Lap Band, at 5 years out the result is the same.

Is this not true???   Do I need a second opinion???

Hi Babbs - My surgeon did not tell me which surgery I should go with or try to sway me one way or another.   He told me it was my decision after he explained my options in detail.  I chose open RNY.   I personally know more people that have had better success with RNY vs Lap Band.  I had a lot of weight to lose, I was 404lbs the day of my surgery. I wanted something that was not reversible.   I had been told you don't dump w/ the lap band and can tolerate sugar with lap band.   I did not want to mess with fills for the rest of my life. It's a personal choice.  You will just have to do your research and follow your heart.  There are actually a few on the IL board that had lap band.  Why don't you ask their opinion and see if they are trully happy with the reults.  Send them a pm, like I said before, it is personal and some may not want to address it in a open forum. Christina

Hi Bridgette, CONGRATS on your 12 lb loss.  I Hope to have my surgery some time in August.  How are you feeling?  How sore are you a few days after surg? Do you get  hungry now (after surgery), or is it different than before surgery? when is your first fill? How long are you taking off work?  My Doc said I could have surg on Thur and back to work on Monday.  I wonder if that is a true story?? I saw 2 women at the seminar who had Lap band over a year ago and they neither one had lost any weight lately.  One had lost 30lb and one had lost 18lb.   I don't want that to be me!!! I have lost 4 lb on pre op diet and hoping for more next week.   Hope you area feeling Really Great very soon!!! Talk to you later,   Babbs

hi babbs. i feel pretty great. just a little sore on the left side where the incisions are. i am a high school teacher so i have the summer off. if i had a desk job where i wasn't corralling 9th - 12th graders i could have returned to work i'm pretty sure in that time. i am a bit hungry because i'm on full liquids right now and those go right through your band, pretty much. i get my first fill 6 weeks from surgery, i'm pretty sure. i am managing my hunger and pain really well and feel i have a new outlook on life. i feel that i am a thin person waiting to reveal herself to the world... and i don't anticipate any trouble loosing weight as i know it will happen in its own time. good luck to you!

I am also pre-op. My doctor asked me which I wanted and I said Lap Band. For me, I didn't want to have any more invastive surgery. Both are suppose to level out at the 5 year mark, and going for fills doesn't bother me. Plus the knowing if I have a major stomach problem at some time. I could have it removed. Its all a personall choice. Lisa

My dr didn't try to sway me either. I went in from the begining wanting lap band and that is what I got.  i too put in lap band for IL and this is where it sent me.  So I go to both, if I needd a question about lap band, but I can get most questions answered here.

every surgeon is different. My Dr does not like lap band but does it if you feel thats what you want. he has been doing lap bands for many more years because he worked in europ and they have been there longer. He says they are best for older  people who wont live long enough to gain all the weight back. He also says it is good for people who don't have much weight to lose. If you have always wanted lapband and you feel it is best for you then you wouldn't need a second opinion. Good luck to you in your decision remember you have to live with it!

I didnt have a choice in the matter. Lap Band wasnt approved 5 years ago. I had to have mine open RNY cause I was a revision from an old stapeling back in 1985. Carla Klein
