Why do we have to drink liquids for 24 hours after a stuck/slime/dump/pb?

Unfortunately last night I found out what it is like to really get something stuck. I almost got sick but didn't. It was just mucus stuff that was coming back up. I tried to make myself sick but I couldn't. I was eating a cheese stick and I don't think I chewed it good enough and it got stuck bad. That was at about6:30 last night. I haven't eaten anything since. I had a shake this morning and am working on another but I am starving and I feel weak and dizzy. I need to eat real food!!! What would happen if I ate something but chewed it really really well? Please help me. Or should I just keep feeling like I am starving to death and just wait it out? What do I do?

Thank you

You stay on liquids after a stuck episode/slime/PB (note: bandsters do not "dump") in order to rest your esophagus and stoma.  Stuck food, esophageal spasms, sliming, PB'ing, all cause irritation and that can cause swelling.  So if you eat solid food too soon afterward, you irritate everything even more, and the next time you try to eat, it happens all over again, and you find yourself in this endless cycle...

If you're feeling weak and dizzy, try eating something pureed.

maybe it's because a regular burp produces air, while a PB produces - errrp!

PB = productive burp

It's when you regurgitate the food you just ate, and it can happen when you eat carelessly or eat a problem food.

It's like a baby spitting up formula - oops, here it comes.  Not like vomiting - no stomach contractions, hardly any bile, and (for me) no nausea.

If you are weak and dizzy try some yogurt, or soup that can be purreed. Like Jean said, it can be a vicious circle. I've done it and eaten something before the 24 hours. Didn't work. Stuck again with really irritated and grouchy to the point of *****y pouch. We just have to tough it out. It is the price we pay for not paying attention. BTW I did liquids yesterday and softs today until dinner. Tried some tortilla chips with lunch, but found first bite that they were too soon. We'll see about dinner tonight.. I am learning not to pu**** Also, I didn't see how far out you are, but you will have to do the same after a fill. My doc requires 36-48 hours of liquids and the same of purreeds, leaning heavily toward the 48 hour time. Too much risk of slip or erosion.

Good luck, it's not fun but this is a learning curve, and some of us learn harder than others. I WAS going to avoid these things, but true to type I've had to learn the hard way.

I took a few bites of some food and chewed really super well until it was pretty mushy in my mouth and I think I did pretty good. Nothing got stuck and I don't feel irritated or anything so I think it will be ok. I won't push anymore though today. it will be a shake for dinner and breakfast tomorrow.

This is a very personal view and i do know most people won't agree with me!

I have never gone on liquids after having a problem - my doc never told me it was necessary.

Having said that, I only once had a stuck episode which lasted more than a few minutes. Ten at the most - then either the offending lump passes or it comes back up. Perhaps if i had been stuck for hours and been retching for ages, I might go for liquids - but it would need to be pretty extreme.  IMO, if I swallow and there is no problem - then there is no problem! If I swallow and there is a problem, then i would stop trying to eat for a while!

And I have never done more than a few hours without solid food after a fill - again my doc does not require it ( and his hospital has never had a patient get a slip!).
