Kelly's Question of the Day - Protein
Well, since it's always on my mind at the time, and it ended up being a part of my last question, I thought i'd get more feedback on our lovely friend....protein.
I am a month out on Wednesday, and getting to the soft foods stage of my journey (which is weeks 4-8). In my literature it says to get 60-80 grams a day. I have been leaning towards the 80 side (although yesterday I only got in 45..eek!) I can see how I could go over 80 once I am able to get more meat in. I can do tuna, and tried chicken yesterday. Pureed beef didn't work, so i'll try again in a few weeks.
So, I guess the question is; How much protein do you typically get in a day? And does anyone not rely on protein shakes to get it?
Thanks!
Kelly

personally i rely a lot on protein shakes to get that 80-100g a day. generraly before i walk out the door in the morning i have 60g in me (double scoop protein powder and milk)
this way im not scrambling in the evening to get the rest in.
EAS makes an excellent powder and if you have access to the states you can get a 5lb bag at sams club for like 32 bucks also tastes good too :)
goodluck to ya

That's pretty much under debate, depending on which study you read. lol
When I was doing protein shakes, each shake had 43g of protein. Didn't seem to hurt me any.

your body can only absorb around 30 grams of protein at a time UNLESS you are a body builder, whatever it doesn't use to fuel your body COULD eventually turn to fat.
and excess anything turns to fat. (Plus excess protein taxes your kidneys).
The 1 gram per pound theory is interesting if you use your body weight, given that OF your total body weight only your lean body mass can effectively use the protein. So if you weight 200 pounds and 150 pounds is lean body tissue, - then feeding the additional 50 pounds of fat will not help. Only those 150 pounds will determine metabolism, caloric expenditure and requirements. That will change, and when it does, so will your body's requirements and abilities.
just type into Google search how much protein is too much..and you will get a wealth of responses, primarily from body building forums...
As I mentioned in another post - it's debatable. Some studies say yes, some say no.

Hey Kelly. I am a few days ahead of you (March 21st). I am still having protein shakes, but I have cut it down to a 1/2 of one in the morning. I could probably get the 80 grams of protein without it, but I am having a hard time finding things that agree that keep the fat and carb portion down. eg. Cheese seems to be OK, but even the light cheese has quite a bit of fat.
In the beginning, I really relied on protein powder (mixed into milk then into my coffee) to get enough protein in. Although I still do the same thing (drinking one as I type), I usually get plenty in just eating. I would say that I typically get 100 grams of protein in a day. Maybe it's time for me to drop the powder
but I always figure that in the range that I'm in, it doesn't hurt.
