Advice for spouses when you are out of it after surgery?

Hi,

I know it is a good idea to have someone with you after surgery in the hospital.  I've read that they are your advocate when you are out of it and can't help yourself.  Other than the obvious - watching for signs of distress - can you give me an idea of anything specific they should be watching for?  I've read that they should remember to make sure your juice is diluted and things are sugar free... what else?  My husband will definitely be with me in the hospital as much as he can, but he asked me what specifically he should be doing and if I can give him a list.. so much the better!  LOL  It's really sweet that he's worried about this already.  He's the best! 

Any advice is appreciated.

My hubby and daughter were there and the greatest thing they did for me was to tell my nurse to stop giving me gravol, which knocked me out.  Every time I tried to eat the jello, I thru up and she was injecting the gravol into my IV as fast as she could get it in there.  So, one of the best things he can do for you is to pay attention to how you feel so he can advocate for you.


I think he'll do fine. 

No real advice but it sure was great to wake up to a face that I loved and knew well!

You're not out of it while he's there, you're still in recovery.  My husband was my personal servant and didn't leave my side - he was there as early as possible til as late as possible.  Thank god because I couldn't do anything for myself. 

Just tell him that it would be so hot if he would be your manservant - whatever you want, he needs to do it.  Just like you would for him.

Thanks for the advice. I will pass this on to him!  He's starting to get nervous.  :)
