An NSAID question....
I'm on the pill now, even though I have migraines, because it didn't seem to make a difference for me during the short periods in my life when I've been off the pill and I need hormonal birth control to help with bleeding issues.
I spoke with two different pharmacists, (one of which was very well versed in bariatric surgery), but both told me that it would not be recommended and would be highly likely to fail post op. The pill is normally absorbed in the stomach and deodenum (which RNY-ers don't meaningfully have post-op) and to be properly absorbed must first mix with an enzyme and/or intestinal bacteria (each said one of these) and this will not be possible post-op due to the re-routing (the necessary stuff is too far down to be of any use for absorbing a small pill).
I'm aiming for the DS and I won't be relying on it, I'm getting a Mirena put in just before surgery.

If you want to try a non-pharmaceutical approach - invest in a TENS machine. I have a small one at home and when the cramps come on, I use it. The machine works to numb the nerves in that area and it calms down the pain. It's more manageable. I used to throw up from the pain I was in. Just horrible!
This is the one I have:

If you do consider buying one, get it from the US - since you're in Canada, you wont need a prescription. The units are a lot cheaper in the US than in Canada. Just as an example..the unit above - here it's $200 - in the US - $90.
And this can be used for any type of pain. I use it for my back pain and hip pain too.

Some employer health care plans will pay a TENS - some won't but many will.
Just make sure to know the criteria they require before you count on them picking up the tab for a TENS - insurers can have stringent requirements in terms of diagnosis and paperwork (all doable but important to know if going that route)
I really need to check into that on my plan.

Sometimes the best support you can get isn't all purple puddles and pink rainbows.
You could try Tramacet. It is not an NSAID and works well for pain management. I have used it post op and after I had a car accident in December.
