Having had a near death experience myself with severe DVT, I too had no idea things were going bad so fast.

Dear Suzyq: What a terrible thing you are going through. You are right, "parents are not supposed to outlive their children", but it has happened, and now you must cope. I have a feeling that in some way or another, your beloved son is going to become your true weight loss angel - he is going to help you with what he could not do himself. In this way, he will live on. He also lives on in his wife.
With each day that comes, try to find something nice - maybe a flower, sunset, the smell of fresh cut grass - that you can purposely and privately share with him in your heart. Our children always live in our heart - that never changes.
And one more thing, we are here for you. Please vent when you need to-it is the sanest thing you can do!

How can Alex's loss ever be processed?

Helen's right - maybe his spirit will act as a guiding light for you.
Instead of being beaten down by this, maybe he will ensure that you,at least, can live a life with meaning and some joy - later on, of course.
