TWH Crowd - Peek Here!
VSG on 01/25/12
Hello!
I am curious what your experiences were with being put to sleep for surgery if you had your surgery at the TWH site! Did they put that darn tube in your mouth before or after you were asleep?
I plan to ask at my pre-surgery appointment but I'm just a wee bit curious and don't actually have that appointment scheduled yet!

with all the surgeries I have had they do it the same way so I cant see TWH being any different...
I was wheeled into the OR they hook up the IV.... they inject a relaxing drug this will not put you to sleep... but it takes the edge off.. allows you to relax enough so that when they put the mask you dont "fight" it...
they then place a mask gently over your mouth and nose and tell you to inhale and count backwards...
I never remember anything after 98 and then *poof* IMA GONE...
I wake in the recovery room grumpy as all hell (thats my reaction to anesthesia) I NEVER remember having the tubes removed but some do...
all in all very little stress... but I dont have a fear of surgeries I go in with the O well whacha gonna do kind of tude..

I remember walking into the OR then made a joke about my arms falling off. I then got really nervous and the hottie anesthesiologist comforting me by playing with my hair. Then the mask went on and I was told "count to 10" I said "one tt" and was out cold. I woke up later feeling
which was gone about 2 mins later after they medicated me. I did have a sore throat but never was I awake when I tube went in.

i walked into the OR joking with the person bringing me in. I lied down on the table and about 3 minutes later he injected me with something into my arm and got real close to me and talked very quietly and gently telling me not to worry they will take really good care of me and to enjoy my sleep. then my body got tingly and I was out.
it was a very stress free experience.

If there is any reason why they might have to intubate you before you float off to lala land, they will explicitly warn you about this at your PATTS appointment. It's rare and only usually done in people with severe obstructive sleep apnea, a broken jaw or an abnormality in the shape of their airway, and even then it isn't always necessary. I'm sure you've got nothing to worry about.
The Anesthesiologist will come and see you while you are waiting to go to the OR. You walk to the OR get on the table. They start putting on the monitor BP cuff etc... Start the IV. I remember her saying that she is giving me something to relax but it wont put me out. The next thing I remember is waking up in recovery.
It would be unusual for them to put the tube in while you are wake just due to cough reflex. I am a nurse and have assisted with 100s of intubations and always medication is given to sedate otherwise you would never tolerate it.
I had problems with vomiting and nausea with other surgeries. They asked about it and gave me meds during surgery to prevent. Best anesthesia I have ever had.
Not even a hint of nausea after.
