Hey all,

I am nauseous most of the time. I can barely handle ONE protein shake a day. I find the protein shakes sweet, thick and heavy. After I'm done the very smell of anything sweet or thick makes me sick..

Did you have nausea post op? Any tips on how to fight it?

Did you have problem with protein shakes post op? How did you make them bearable?

Thanks,
April

You dont NEED protein shakes. Find other ways of getting your protein in. You're on full fluids, right?

Greek Yogurt, milk, you can add skim milk powder to things to increase the protein content of foods.

Take gravol for the nausea, but make sure you're still awake enough during the day to get enough fluids in. I hated the sweetness of protein shakes.

hang in there, you'll get through this.

Hi there

Exactly what Monica said. You can use milk, yogurt, puddings, cottage cheese. There are so many protien choices out there
I had nausea at the beginning and was told I was not eating enough or often enough. You need to make yourself eat every 2 1/2 to 3 hours and get your water in. That in the beginning is more important. You don't want to get dehydrated

Take care

Hi April,

Nausea is very common.  I took adult chewable Gravol to combat it.  I disagree with whomever said you don't need protein shakes.  If your centre has advised you to take them, then yes you DO need them.  It could be the brand you're using is not good for you.  You may have to get some samples and try a few before you find one that works for you.  Use more milk than recommended so they're not so thick.  Use a cup with a lid so you don't have to smell them.  Make sure they're really cold.  Drink lots of water so you don't get dehydrated and by all means, take the Gravol!

Hang in there!

as if you disagreed with me!!!!! lol

I should have expanded on my thought.
All i meant was they weren't a life or death thing, and if they were causing nausea so bad that she couldnt get her fluids in, then look for other sources of protein that are non/nausea causing.

But Karen's right. (sheesh) there are LOTS of shakes out there, ask for samples, or ask about their return policy before you purchase them. Have you tried unflavoured protein?
