The maps (over the years) are particularly impressive.

Interesting read.

We are just above the highest areas. I am sure Canada is just as bad.

Out stats in Canada are actually a bit better. It's thought that it may be because we have a more concentrated urban population and urbanites tend to be more active and more likely to be a healthy weight than rural people.
I had OHIP approved Duodenal Switch surgery with Dr. Dennis Hong at St. Joseph's Hamilton on March 7th, 2012. Want more information on the DS in Ontario? Send me a private message!

That makes me so sad. I am obsessive about teaching my children about healthy eating. I can't bear the thought of them being fat and unhealthy. I really hope it sinks in and they don't eventually become one of these statistics.

I understand your concern for your children, Heather and trust me, I'm not telling you how to parent, so please take this comment in the context it is intended.  Please be careful with how much focus you place on weight, eating, etc with your children.  You will set an excellent example to them through your own eating and healthy lifestyle which is far more powerful, in my opinion.  My parents were obsessive about my eating and weight and where did it get me? Morbidly obese. lol  Just my 2 cents. :)

I hear where you're coming from Karen. I laugh about my childhood in that I was told I was getting fat in one breath, but told to clean my plate and drink my Kool-aid in the other.

My approach with my children is one of learning, helping them look at advertising with scrutiny, reading food labels to make healthy choices, following the Canada Food good, choosing treats (they get to pick the day of the week and they know that it's ok to indulge at special occasions), not looking at weight but rather BMI, and that playing is exercise.  Absolutely no criticism because we talk about how people come in all shapes and sizes. In their case, they come in a small size. They are both on the low side of normal, and hopefully I'll be able to teach them enough to combat what advertisers throw at them at every turn to keep them that way.

A very sensible approach. :)
