No you don't. It tracks everything. You only need to go near your computer for it to connect and do your stats. The only thing I use my phone for (and mine isn't compatible with it) is to follow my profile and to connect with myfitnesspal. You don't need a phone.

I wi**** had the ability to monitor your heart rate. I looked at a heart rate monitor and it is $150.00. I will probably buy that instead.

My sister just bought a watch heart monitor at Giant Tiger for $15, look into that, the price might be right.
