Stevia is a new sweetner and more natural I understand. I haven't tried it yet but plan too.
A girl I work with is LOUDLY against ALL of them...stevia and agave nectar included. She's preaches unpasturized honey and 100% maple syrup for sweetening. I'm new to all of this as I used to be a Splenda junkie, but I WILL say over time, the less sweet you have, the less you need, and vice versa!

Us tree hugging, bark chewing granola's can be hard to take! I know that none of the artificial sweeteners exist in nature, relating them to natural products doesn't work for me and I echo what Jodi77 says about using thus needing less sweet over time. I use a very small teaspoon of honey or maple syrup in my oatmeal/cream of wheat, so that's my guilty pleasure, but its all natural! And it tastes SO good, which I can not say about any of the artificial sweeteners I have tasted thus far. Just my opinion.
Another co-worker read a book on sugar and told me how they get around saying Spelnda is "MADE FROM SUGAR" (knowing I was a user). And don't quote me but it's something to the effect of extracting the sugar alcohols and using a tiny wee bit of them...just enough to say their slogan but not really what the bulk of it is! I work with a lot of "bark chewing granola's"!! LOL

There is no evidence that either is harmful, however Splenda (which is a combination of sucralose which is calorie free and dextrose which does have calories) contains a small amount of real sugar so it can impact your blood sugars, whereas Twin (aspartame) has been shown to have no impact on blood sugar at all, so if you are a diabetic, this might be a concern for you. I personally prefer Splenda, when available, for taste and because too much aspartame can bother my stomach. Small amounts don't though, so I don't worry about the amount in a single diet pop or Crystal Light. Use whatever you prefer, but I would stay away form real sugar while you are losing weight, you just don't need the carbs. While losing weight I just avoided anything that needed sugar. Now that I'm at goal, I use about half a teaspoon of regular sugar in a large tea, I just find I don't need things as sweet anymore. The idea that natural real sugar with carbs is "better" for you than an artificial sweetener is just silly and I would ask those people for evidence of any harmful effects from artificial sweeteners (hint - it doesn't exists and has been studied extensively!). So stay away from the calories for now and just use whatever you think tastes better!
