Uh-oh. Could this endanger Ontario's funding of WLS?
Holy crap, I just hit "report" instead of "reply" on this post, but I closed the window immediately without inputting anything I hope that means the report didn't "take"!
And the only reason I wanted to reply was to cheer this post!
Bravo, Pat, you're absolutely right!

In Ontario it really isn't all about the money. Even if it is not cost-effective (and that is not clear in Ontario) many other things are considered including patient's quality of life and there is lots of evidence that that is greatly improved following WLS. Once a program has been established, especially one with such huge demand, it is very hard to defund it and cost alone would not be enough reason
By the way, could they have picked a MORE inflammatory or undignified picture to use with the article? What the heck is that all about? A mostly naked patient on the operating table? I was gowned on top and covered by blankets on the bottom during surgery. I hate the way the media portrays fat people! Makes me so mad.

Ha! Yeah, I guess so. :)
I guess what bothers me about them using that picture is that it is clearly designed to repel people. Not that I think our bodies are repulsive myself. They could have used a picture of someone in surgery who is still covered up, before they strip the person down. But no, then people wouldn't get a thrill out of staring at a naked fat person. It's like all those pictures of obese people from the neck down that they show on TV to accompany any news item about "the obesity epidemic" (like fat people are the plague or something).
Don't mind me, this is just one of my little pet peeves...

I definitely don't agree with the pic they used either and I would hope this person signed a release of the photo. I can't get over how many people are in the OR in that pic either. I have been in the OR 3 times as a guest for bariatric surgery and there was the surgeon, the assisting doc, the anesthesist and one nurse in there. You can see a cam in someone's hands too so maybe they were filming a documentary or something.
