Roux-en-Y Question..????
A while back I recall seeing a post in regards to the length of bowel that went from your pouch to the joining of the stomach (rest of your bowel connection). Hope I am explaining this enough....
The post was in regards to the length of this portion of bowel and how the length would related to your weight loss ...
I believe if I recall correctly the poster quoted (in numbers) what was considered a short length vs a long length of small bowel in this area. (Knowledge that we would obtain off our surgical reports).
If anyone can shed any light on this issue I appreciate it...

This is something the surgeon will decide. Each doctor has his preference based on his experience doing hundreds of surgeries on various sized patients.
Proximal bypass is usually anything less than 150cm
Distal bypass is usually anything more than 150cm
The body is miraculous and will adapt to the surgery and figure out a way to begin absorbing more of the calories we eat. It begins making these repairs immediately after surgery and by the 1 to 2 year mark our body is a lean, mean calorie absorbing machine. The lower small intestine and large intestine will actually grow additional cillia (the little finger-like tentacles that grab nutrients as food passes by).
However, we will always have the same level of malabsorption of nutrients. Certain vitamins and minerals are absorbed in the upper 5 feet of the small intestine and those parts can't be "re-grown" by the body. So we can expect to begin to absorb more calories, but never be able to absorb all the same nutrients.

Dr. Riache at OWMC told me she bypassed 150 cm and that is the standard.
I run The O.W.L.S. (Ottawa Weight Loss Surgery) Closet. We are a local clothing exchange and social group stemmed off of a couple of the local support boards on Facebook and also OH members for those having had or going to have WLS. We meet monthly for a large clothing exchange and potluck in the East end of Ottawa.
