A word of caution......

St Joes Hamilton has been turning away transfers for DS if your BMI is below 60. In general they've tightened up the rules and aren't "freely" doing VSG either.

Referal: November 2011 to Windsor Assessment Center, Orientation: February 9th, 2012, Request Transfer to Hamilton: March 23, 2012, Transfer madness for April, May, June, Abdominal Ultrasound: August 1, 2012, Dietician & SW: October 3, 2012,
Scope: November 8, 2012, Internist: November 14, 2012, Surgeon: November 27th, 2012

Surgery: April 10, 2013. VSG and gallbladder removed.

I agree that things have changed at St Joe's in Hamilton. I have heard that it is much harder to get DS in Hamilton than it was even last year. It is a much more expensive procedure to perform (6 hours OR time rather than 2 for RNY). There are still quite a few sleeves being done but there are also quite a few people who have been denied that option. Basically, you can't have it just because you prefer it or think it is a better option for you--there are certain criteria that have to be met.

It certainly doesn't hurt to try and all the surgeons there are excellent--good luck to your friend

I would like to see more current data on reflux after WLS.  I know of many RNy'ers that now suffer from reflux (just as I know many VSG'ers)...even though they were originally told that RNY would "cure" reflux.  I wonder if that data has changed.

Those that weren't around when the DS (and then the VSG) got pulled a few years ago, amongst all the OOC drama, probably don't get your anger.

I will vehemently disagree with the person who said we should just let drs make the decision for us, though.  Not WLS related, but I've been with my mother for the last year, advocating for her and her severe health issues with many dr's who don't seem to even know how to read a medical journal, let alone understand current best practice.  The disagreement in their own medical community is amazing.  I think we need to do our own research, and ask questions...
