liver function test post op

I had surgery Jan 17, 2013

I met with the nurse practitioner last week and she sent me for my 6 month blood work ( a little late I know)

My family Dr just called to say the liver function test showed elevated liver enzymes. He wants to re do the tests in a few weeks, but asked if I was a heavy drinker... um no I haven't had a drink since Christmas last year and even then I have not been much of a drinker in at least 10-15 years.

Is this common post surgery... the only thing I'm seeing online relates to fatty liver, it was a fatty liver last year but surely the 94 pounds lost and new diet would have helped that.

Have you had any problems with your Gallbladder? The blood work around when I had mine out had elevated liver enzymes.  I was told that the gallbladder problem can cause this.  They tested a few weeks later and I never heard any more, so I assumed they went back down.

You can develop gallbladder problems with rapid weight loss.

I just had blood tests with increased  liver enzyme 2 weeks ago - and I had them redone Tuesday.

Gallbladder came out yeaaars ago ( ? 15 years ago) - so they are still investigating.

They asked me if I took Tylenol for a bit and I did since I was fighting a laryngitis for the previous 3 weeks.

I had huge problems with this post op. One month normal, then skyrocket the next (like 400+). Saw an onslaught of doctors and specialists. Tons of tests. End result after going to the liver clinic was 'this happens with some people that lose weight rapidly'. I was scared out of my mind for 8 months, but all ended up fine. Best to get it checked, but don't panic.

I too had no gallbladder and haven't drank alcohol in 20 years.

This is extremely common after rny or any wls. Your family physician is doing the right thing but needs to learn more about this in terms of rny and that is why you have the bariatric clinic.

Elevated liver enzymes seems to be quite common in the initial losing phase with the processing of a lot of protein and supplements.  Also I've heard of it tied into artificial sweetener use too.  I think your family doctor should first talk to a doctor at the centre about it.
