I'm not a doctor but that's the silliest thing I've ever heard. They bike on "Biggest Loser". Sure they wouldn't waste their time!! You do anything you can/want to do that is moving, and gets your heart rate up...

WHAT?!?!  Of course walking and biking are exercise!!  Anything that you can do to burn extra calories outside the normal routine of your day is exercise!  If you look up how many cals you just burned doing that ride, you will know it is worth it!

Light walking (45min.), bicycle, treadmill (walking) and stairmaster is how I shead 190lbs.

I would be VERY concerned about the comment your surgeon made.......

it is exercise, but I think he was thinking along the lines that if you bike very fast and build up a good heart rhythm, that's a cardio workout, but if you ride slow or at an intermediate speed, it's not as substantial an exercise.   There are stationery bikes at all gyms as well as spinning classes, so yes it is an exercise.

Your doctor is an idiot.
I walk 3 miles every day in 60-62 minutes - no days off, ever.  I walk in a moderately hilly neighborhood and I'm sweaty when I get home.  I put 7,500+ steps on my pedometer and that is a 500+ cal. burn.   I've lost 108 lbs. @ 4.5 mos. post-op. I also left diabetes, sleep apnea, high blood pressure and what wife describes as "general grouchines" somewhere out there on the streets.
Did I mention that your doctor is an idiot?
Keep walking, walking, walking down than weight-loss staircase.

My doc and nut say that there is a difference between physical activity and exercise. While walking (regular, not powerwalking or anything) and bike riding (leisurely, not high-speed) are good physical activity and will help keep you healthy, they might not get you in the target heart rate for the length of time that you need to have it be considered exercise. If you are mountain biking or biking uphill constantly or powerwalking or something like that, it's a bit different, but regular walking might not cut it. She said to rank what you're doing on a scale of 1-10. 1 is something you could do easily without getting tired (leisurely walking) and 10 is about to pass out. Real exercise needs to be a 5 or higher to count.
