Six weeks only11lbs gone so far
I guess I am officially a slow loser. My NUT looked at my records and the graph's of my macro nutrients the past 30 days and was suprised I hadn't lost more. I'm averaging 600 to 800 cals a day, 75 to 90 grams of protien and 40 to 60 carbs a day. She wanted me up to 1200 cals and 100 to 150 carbs a day. That will slow my loss to a crawl.
I would like the more carbs, it will sharpen my mind and give me more energy thru the day but really concerned about what that will do to my rate of loss...
Any ideas on how to tweak things?

For me personally I know that many carbs would completely stop my weight loss altogether. It's always been that way- even in past diets. I'm not a believer in "no carbs" but 150 is a LOT. Especially when veggies still have some carbs too and condiments that you might like.
You could try increasing a little, you are a guy afterall and the whole 600-800 calorie guideline seems a little low for men, but I'm no dr. Maybe you are in starvation mode and more calories may kick start more loss? You'll just have to play with it.
Other than that it sounds like you are doing the diet by the book. I would just make sure to get all the water requirements in since that can slow things down too and make sure you are working out at least a few times a week to help yourself along...

At 150 grams of carbs per day I doubt you would lose any weight and would likely gain weight.
I'm in maintenance having lost 100% of my excess weight and I don't even come close to that many carbs.
When my weight loss slowed I reviewed what I was eating and realized the bulk of my protein was coming from soft sources like protein shakes, cheese, Greek yogurt, beans.
I changed to dense protein, mainly tender beef and seafood, and saw my weight loss resume and felt a lot of restriction. Dense protein fills you up with a small amount and keeps you full longer.
Limiting my carbs to less than 40 grams per day was also instrumental for my continued weight loss. When my carbs got too high my weight loss slowed.
I followed the plan my doctor gave me and lost 100% of my excess weight and have kept it off without a lot of effort.
1. Eat 600-800 calories per day when losing weight and 1,200 calories to maintain
2. Limit carbs to less than 40 grams per day
3. Eat 70-100 gram of protein daily
4. Minimum 64 oz. liquids daily
5. Regular exercise/physical activity
6. Track what you eat ( I use myfitnesspal.com to track calories, carbs, protein, etc.)
Review what you are eating and make appropriate adjustments. Cut out slider foods like bread, rice, potato, chips, carbs in general. You can eat slider foods all day long and feel no restriction.
Dense protein, limiting carbs and regular physical activity were responsible for me reaching my weight loss goal and maintaining.
If you feel you lack energy you may be low on B-12. I take a daily B-12 sublingual and my level has been great on all my labs.
Good luck,
George

Thanks George, I'm down to just one protien drink a day. I can eliminate that. I have had no slider food and write everything down in mfp
Most my protien comes from eggs, ham, turkey, tuna and now I'm starting in on adding beef. I struggled getting all my water in but doing much better now.
Like you, I'm concerned the carb thing will basically halt my progress. I do need to step up the exercise. But I'm still in PT for a bumb shoulder for another 6 weeks which takes swimming out of the picture and we are moving so my membership is in flux and winter is coming. I need to sort out the exercise picture for sure.
I'm going to check in on the B12 thing right now. This afternoon wall I hit is not helpful.

I buy B-12 sublinguals at Costco and take 1 every morning. They make a difference.
I gave up protein shakes at 6 months post-op and resolved to get all my protein from food.
I was concerned I could not get all my protein from food but a little investigation showed me I had nothing to worry about.
4oz. Steak 32g protein 0 carbs
3 oz. Shrimp 18g protein 0 carbs
4 oz. Chicken Breast 26g protein 0 carbs
Good luck,
George

Mr. Smith
I actually don't know whether it will or it won't stunt you. i just got back from a visit with my surgeon and the medical director of the program. At 6 weeks out i had lost 8lbs and was concerned but let it ride even with the 600-800 cals 30-40 carbs and 60-80 drams protein. i figured I'd catch up. at three months I've lost 16lbs so i told my surgeon what now. basically they feel with my calorie intake and my low carb and working ou,t cardio 45 mins 5 days a week and strength training 3 that i need to up my cals, up my carbs and protein and dial back my exercise.
For me at 3 months, it's time to try something else because this is not working and according to popular wisdom I'm half way through my honeymoon period. they want me to re-introduce shakes, and yogurt because i just can't up food to get what i need and they are going to monitor me on a weekly basis. I will let you know how it goes. Are you logging your food? because it was really helpful that i log everything and the 3 of us could go over my diet and check it out. I have not been a slow loser ever before so this is shocking to me. I lost 10lbs in the week before surgery, on a much less restrictive diet than now, so as i said, shocking. We also had every blood test known to man run and they were all perfect.
At six weeks you may not be ready to try what they suggest but for me at 3 months I've been thinking, if it's true that there are people that have to keep their carbs really low to lose weight because they are carb sensitive, isn't it possible that there are others who may lose better on higher carbs? i don't have the answer but if my BMR is 1345 and I'm eating at most 800 cals and losing such small amounts, then something needs to be adjusted. Good Luck. I will keep you posted.

1. don't measure yourself against others in amount of weight lost. We all took differing amounts of time to put it, it will come off in differing amounts as well.
2. Carbs are our enemy. Natural carbs are ok, but try to limit to protien first then veggies.
3. the Nut is partially correct. Upping caloric intake may kick in weight loss. Our body, when it sees a consistent amount of calories in, puts us into survival/starvation mode. By increasing the caloric intake (and varying it week to week) our body doesn't know WHAT to do, so it burns...
4. the same for exercise - vary the amount/intesity - since the body expects to use x, it will burn x, even though we are only exercising at m. When we bump to y, it burns MORE....
Hope that makes sense....

FWIW Mr. Smith--I am on very low carb ~20 per day and I have never had so much doggone energy. The energy I am feeling is overwhelming and I do 5 hours a week of intense Zumba. Once I detoxed from carbs (and I think I lost my ketosis too at around month 2), it was really easy to stay away from them and not crave them. My husband is doing the same food plan I am, has lost 70 pounds, and has never felt better on low carb. He is 6'5" tall and very fit. We laugh together about our new lifestyle and the evil of carbs. Good luck and I hope the pounds soon come off for you, no matter what you decide on doing. I hit a huge 1 month stall, re-evaluated, cut my calories and upped my Zumba, and then the weight loss resumed. Who can ever figure it all out? There is a different idea for every expert.
