VSG on 01/25/12
Hello!  Just introducing myself.......

My name is Melissa and I'm from Toronto, Canada.  Last Wednesday January 25th I went in to have the RNY surgery but signed a consent for them to do the VSG if anything happened which they didn't suspect there would be any problems with since I had no co-morbidities however......When they went in to operate what they found was very perplexing!  I had a congential malrotation of my intestines that made it impossible to do the RNY surgery and after 30 minutes of investigating they decided to do the VSG surgery.  All these years I had no idea that my colon (large intestine) and my small intestine were on opposite sides of my body!  Anyway....I've been a little overwhelmed since I have about 180 of excess weight to lose.  I could use any tips and supports for using this VSG tool to my advantage please!

That must have been a real surprise!  You have come to the right place- welcome!  The vets here do a fantastic job of posting tips all the time.  Here is a list of some of my favorites- although note that i am only 6 weeks out and not a vet!

1.  Plan your food, and do not eat unplanned food.
2.  Track your food intake- all of it.  Many of us use myfitnesspal.com  It is free, easy, and truly helps!
3.  No grazing!
4.  Many low carb it keeping carbs under 40 grams.
5.  During the losing phase a common calore range is 600-800.  My NUT told me today 600.
6.  Sip, sip, sip!
7.  Eat the protein first, always.  It closes the pyloric valve so you are full longer.  Search pyloric valve for a fantastic post by Frisco on this topic.
8.  Undereat your sleeve.  If you can eat 4 ounces, only eat 2 or so and see if that will satiate you.
9.  If you fall off the wagon, crawl right back on.
10.  If you do not want to share with coworkers or friends or whatever, have a plan of what you will say to them when everybody notices the weight loss.
11.  It is common to stall at 3 weeks.  Don't fret and just stay on plan!
12.  Follow your vitamin regiment.

Congrats on your sleeve- we are all a group of happy folks here so welcome aboard!

Hi Melissa, well that was a surprise aye?
However alls not lost, I have been surfing this message board for AGES, and I can tell you it is totally achieveable, Use your vsg as a tool, and try to keep on track, as every WLS can be cheated.
I read a while back a lady how was 473? something like that dropped all her excess weight, by following her food plan and exercise regime.
Post any questions that come up or use the search tool
Good luck

Wow that would be a shock!

I'd do some searches on VSG and the anatomical changes first - rather than a pouch, you have a small , normal functioning stomach with a pyloric valve as opposed to a stoma to control the regulation of food from your stomach into your intestines. Protein first will really help you utilize this little valve :)

There have been several very successful VSG'ers who have lost a large amount of weight with no mal-absorption - a lot of the same principals will apply to both surgeries in terms of WL strategies (and yes, you really need a plan - there's no winging it)  protein first, limit carbs, exercise, water, vitamins, and a healthy attitude.

If you want - you should come over to the BMI over 50 board where there are people who understand the special challenges of starting at a higher BMI. There are quite a few sleeve people over there who are doing fantastic.

Welcome to the world of VSG!

Hi Melissa.....angels smile on us all sometimes.  Just my opinion....the VSG is a much superior surgery to the RNY.  I hope/think you will find this to be the case as well.  I started this journey with 188 lbs to lose and I have no doubt I will reach my goal.  You are in a good spot....don't be discouraged.

Welcome to the board and there are tons of vets here that will help guide you.

Well, surprise, surprise!!! Bet you were stunned!   However, I hope you are having a good recovery.

I'm attaching the VSG----FAQs link that are shared with new members.
You probably have allot of this info---WLS in general but some good stuff for VSG specific.
