What were your protein and fluid guidelines post op?

I am 6 days post op today and finally home from Mexico and feeling pretty decent so I want to start tracking to make sure I am getting in what I need. Unfortunately, as many of us are aware, surgery in Mexico means you don't get a whole lot for "hand holding", which I am fine with, but that's why I am asking here. Yesterday I got in roughly 50g of protein but thinking I need to do better from what I have read around here. So, what were your protein and fluid goals for the first month post op?

My protein/fluid goals for the first month are the same as they are for the rest of my life.. there's just the understanding that it might take time to get there. :)

60-80 grams of protein, 64 ounces minimum of fluid.  I reached the protein goal by the second or third day I was home, and the fluid goal a bit after.

I was on full liquids for four weeks after surgery. For those four weeks, I was supposed to get a minimum of 64 oz. of fluids and 60 grams of protein per day. At four weeks out, I moved on to purees - still had the minimum 64 oz. of fluids but my protein got bumped up to 75 grams per day. That was for the next four weeks.

First few days it was 60 grams of protein.  I did this with 2 shakes (12oz each).  I was to drink 1oz every 10-15 minutes, so I could get in about 4-6 oz per hour.  Protein shakes took me 2 hours to get through, and then I did Vitamin water or Crystal light the other times.  Water was 2 16oz bottles per day.  My clinic told me to count the protein drink as part of my water consumption for the first few weeks.  So a week in, I was probably at:

24 oz Protein Drink (Premier)- 60g

32 oz Water + 24 oz Protein= 56oz "water/fluid"

I was told to drink 64 ounces of water and over 60 Grams of protein per day.

I could only get about 48 ounces of liquids for the first few months, and warm liquids like chicken broth, coffee and tea were easier to drink.  I'd put protein powder in chicken broth, yogurt, jello, pudding, anything I could, and I would always make my protein numbers.

good luck.

My goal was 80 grams of protein, but with the caveat that during the first month it would be unlikely I would attain that.  (I did. Isopure Plus got me there.)  Fluids were a minimum of 64 ounces, but I found out rapidly that I needed far more or my blood pressure dropped like a lead weight.  I go that number up much higher quickly as well.  Know though that I have a larger sleeve so protein and fluids was far easier for me than the normal experience with a small sleeve.  Hang in there.

Most importantly, drink plenty of fluids after surgery.  I was told fluids were more important than worrying about the protein for the first week.  If you don't, you risk dehydration and a return visit to the hospital.

Daily guidelines are:

80 grams of protein

30-40 grams of carbs

64 ounces MINIMUM of fluids

As you well know, don't drink 30 minutes before or after you eat.  Eat or drink your protein first.

For the first weeks while on the liquids and purees, I drank at least two protein shakes per day (Premier Protein RTD 30 grams of protein).  The protein aids in healing your body after surgery and helps to give you energy.

Hope this helps.  Very best of luck to you

Wow, 80 grams of protein seems like so much right now! I am not liking the Premier Protein RTD very much.. makes me gag after the first few sips but I am liking my Syntrax Nectar samples. Need to order some more!

Thanks for all of the responses!

It's not easy to hit 80 grams protein so early out of surgery.  Just do the best you can, but stay hydrated!
