How to break a stall?

I've been sitting at the same weight for a few days now. I'm not exactly eating potato chips and ice cream either, and I have been exercising. Ideas? Thanks!

You don't.  You wait it out (even though it will drive you crazy).  The hardest parts of this process are "faith" (in the process) and "patience".

If you're following most standard dietary guidelines for post-op bariactric surgery, every solution to breaking a stall you've heard, or will hear, is baloney.  Sorry, but that's simply the truth, and there are too many myths being spread around about "breaking a stall".

Every now and then your body is going to take a break and the scale will not show lower numbers.  This happens as it shifts around stored up fat and adjusts water retention.  Water, and how your body handles it, is almost always the culprit for these little stalls along the way.  Because of routine body function, a normal person's weight can vary randomly by four pounds just on water alone.  That number is likely higher for those of us starting out on the weight loss journey.

Now, all this assumes you're focused on eating lean protein, and healthy fats, while avoiding sugars and grains in all their forms.  Sugars and grains will derail or slow down the weight loss process.  Google "fat adapted" and follow the instructions there.  You'll find it fits with the bariactric dietary choices.

This is a great answer and I actually feel relieved reading it. Sometimes when things are out of your control, you just have to sit with them. I'll consider this my meditation lesson of the day! Thanks. :)

For what it's worth...

I "stalled" for three weeks once.  What really happened is I stopped taking my BP meds and it took three weeks for everything to balance back out.  So I know what it's like to get on that scale and see no change day after day.

However, as usually happens for everyone, I lost body fat during that whole episode.  Now, I only stall because I choose to.  Maintenance is a different process.

Also, I didn't make up the four pounds.  It's medically documented, but at the moment I can't remember which book I read it in.

Stick to the plan.  Stalls, plateaus, whatever you want to call them are completely normal throughout the entire weight loss period.  If your weight doesn't change for an entire month, then it's worth worrying about.

Very well!  Although I'm in a bit of a stall myself this week, which is totally unsurprising since I was traveling last week and expected my weight to be screwed up afterward.

I'm debating taking a nap so I can make it through the rest of the day.  Thursdays are now my super long exhausting day.

My mantra:  Just keep swimming, just keep swimming.  If you are doing all the right things, just keep it up.  I would sit at the same weight for 10-14 days and get super frustrated but I wouldn't change anything.  Finally the scale would start to move again.  So far so good.  Taking measurements helps too.  My measurements change even if my weight does not.

Good point! I tried on a pair of jeans today and they fit a lot better than in the past.
