I am now 2 months out, went back to work driving my school bus on Weds and couldn't believe what happend to me. I got diareah. Oh my! The only thing I had was a protein drink made with skim milk and designer whey chocolate protein. It didn't dawn on  me at that point what caused this. then for lunch I had cottage cheese. NOt a good choice, it happened again! So I didn't have any milk products today until I was home for the night. I had my protein drink, OMG it wasn't a half an hour and I was on the _____. For 3 hours I have been suffering.
Any ideas for getting my protien in. I have been living on skim milk. cottage cheese, greek yogurt and cheese sticks. I have a hard time still with meats I can eat maybe 1 ounce at a time. I am going to call my nut tomorrow for ideas, but I know I will get plenty of help from all of you on OH.

Thank you, My OH friends,
Debbie

I too became lactose intolerant  after my RNY.  I can sometimes take lactaid chewable tablets prior to eating or drinking dairy and it helps.  Sometimes more then others.  You could also try soy milk.  If you can get use to it, it is actually better for you.  Good Luck to you.

I was wondering if the lactaid chewables would help. That's good to know. I am going to experiment with different types of milk, like the soy or lactaid.

Thank for you help,
Debbie

Whey protein isolate has no lactose in it.  Try to limit your protein drinks to this type, or soy protein and use lactaid as much as you can for other things.

Hi Andrea, The designer whey is whey isolite, but I mix it with skim milk to get more protein in.
I am going to try the lactaid and see how that works.
Thank you,
Debbie

I was lactose intolerant for a while.  I used Lactaid and you can buy Lactaid milk and use it for protein drinks just like you would regular milk.  I did overcome it and I don't have any problems with dairy now.  Also, are you far enough out that you can eat other things - refried beans, bean and bacon soup, Special K protein cereal (10g per serving).

Thanks for your reply! It's really strange that I could have milk and then all of a sudden I couldn't. How long did it take for you to overcome this? I am far enough out to eat other things, but I can't have very much right now. I struggle to get 1 to 2 ounces of protein in. I have never tried refried beans or the soup, but I am up to try anything once...Debbie

Hi,

I became lactose intolerant immediately after surgery.  First, it was recommended by my NUT to try whey isloate with soy milk.  It's not bad except I couldn't get used to slightly green milk.  Now I use Lactaid milk with no problems.  Oddly enough, I can eat cottage cheese and regular cheese  but Laughing Cow cheese is a no no.  Try Chobani yogurt.  It  has 14 grms. of protein per serving...alot of bang for your buck and it's delicious.  Good luck!

Thank you Jackie, where do you find Chobani yogurt, i have never had that kind? I am going to pick up some lactaid milk and soy to see what I can tolerate better. I am afraid to drink any kind of milk right now, but I will give it another try with these...Debbie

Hello again,

I see you are from Mass.  You can find Chobani at Stop and Shop.  If I were you, I'd try the Lactaid milk first.  At least it looks like milk!  Keep in touch, so I know how you made out!  Can I put you on my friends list?  Take care.
