Coffee Drinkers post RNY: Reg. or Decaf??
I know there are die hard coffee drinkers out there who are post RNY. I worked w a few fellow nurses who were post RNY & still drank reg. coffee, but I do not know if they were also excellent in keeping their H2O intake up. I love one good mug in the morning, Folgers Simply Smooth, & then I am set for the rest of the day.
My question: do you Have to give up coffee post RNY, if you are a good H2O drinker before & after RNY?
I was pretty die hard, too, drinking 4 to 5 cups a day. I weaned myself down to 1 cup a day before surgery, so I wouldn't have too much caffeine withdrawal. My dietician said that she doesn't want me to do any caffeine for the first 2 months, and then if I am doing well, I could have one cup of coffee in the morning. I am only on day 11 post surgery, and haven't had any coffee in 12 days, but surprisingly I haven't missed it.
Hello. I hesitate to respond since there seems to be so many strong opinions regarding how people should do things but I allow myself one copy of regular coffee per day. I have always been a good water drinker so it doesn't interfere with that. I don't drink anything bu****er (and my protein drink) during the day so I don't think a cup will kill me. I did wait until I was about 3 months out though. At first I just did decaf and then I'd do half reg and half decaf and then I got back to reg. I wasn't sure how my pouch would react so I was cautious. I should also add that I only have a smaller cup as that is about all I can handle for some reason.
But like everything else regarding your WLS journey, I'd recommend checking with your nutritionist and or surgeon's office if you have a concern. I really do think it's best to check with the professionals.
Best of Luck!

There are lots of opinions swirling around regarding coffee. Some say it is a diuretic, and therefore you should drink extra water if drinking coffee. Other studies show that the caffeine in a cup of coffee has no effect on diureses-- the same as plain water. That said, I didn't go back to coffee until about 6 weeks out-- and then did decaf with some milk in it. My favorite is a skinny vanilla latte from Starbucks, with a scoop of protien powder in it.
My regular days are 1 or 2 cups of regular coffee, then it's water the rest of the day. Love me a cup of good coffee!

I stopped drinking it before surgery as directed by my surgeon so I wouldn't get the headaches right after surgery. I started back drinking it at 4 weeks. Just two cups and still drink the two cups. It didn't dehydrate me, or cause me to turn into anything, lol. My weight loss has been steady with a few stalls that lasted one week. In 11 months I lost 158 LBS and hit goal. Oh and I'm 54 years old.
So what I'm saying , for me, it didn't hurt me in any way at all.

My surgeon, who I worship on a part-time basis, is adamant that coffee is BAD.
So, we go through this routine every visit:
Him: You're not drinking coffee, right?
Me: Coffee?
Him: Are you drinking any?
Me: We're allowed to have coffee? How much do you recommend.
Him: I'm serious. You're not drinking coffee anymore, right?
And then out comes the sorry tale -- I am drinking coffee. I hate to see this nice man who saved my life, feeling bad. So I lie and say I'm still having one or two cups.
Him: A week?
Me: BWAhahahahahahahaha! Yes. Of course. A week.
I'm really down to 3-5 cups a day, but pre-op it was more like 6-10, so I would have to say I'm improving. There really are days when it's as little as two. I can't remember when. But I know it happened.
My ticker (below) tells the tale -- I'm doing very well. So . . . you have to make a personal executive choice. And it all depends on how addicted you are.
(Let me put it this way. Often as not, my students check in with me: You HAVE had your coffee today, right?!?!)

This is my distorted logic I drink decaf coffee and regular ice tea so i figure if I decaf one I can caffeine the other, crazy I know.
I drink Sonic Tea with Splenda and extra ice that's my transference. As far as coffee I drink 1-2 cups a day.
I know some people were told no more caffeine after surgery, but I was not one of those I often go out to coffee with my bariatric nurse so I am sure if there were any negative repercussions she would tell me......At least I hope.

I would have 2 pots of coffee a day pre-op. I was told to cut out caffeine totally before surgery. So I did. I realized how addicted I was to it and it scared me. I think I become addicted very easily to things. So since I had gone so far as to kick the habbit, I never went back. I drink coffee now and it's decaf. I love it for the taste not the caffeine. I put fat free cream in it and some splenda. I'm happy. I can only get a mug in these days but that's enough to make me happy. And it's less expensive!
