Deducting WLS from taxes

I am a cash patient. Has anyone successfully deducted their surgery from their income taxes? I know you are allowed to deduct them if it goes over a certain percentage of your income. Every little bit helps.

Thanks!

probably not.  If the IRS finds out they will probably charge you a luxury tax cause you might be rich!

Yes, any medical expense incurred can be deducted.  As you stated, it will be based on your AGI.  You won't be able to deduct such things as your protein because those are meal replacements (everyone has to eat).  But you can also deduct your prescription medications, and your medical mileage to/from hospitals, doctor visits, etc.  And, if overnight expenses were incurred such as hotels, it may be possible to deduct them as well.  This may include caretaker expenses as well.

I am not an accountant.  Since you are a cash patient, definately seek the help of a CPA at tax time.  They will find you every LEGAL deduction possible.  Save your receipts and create a mileage log.

good luck!

Oh yeah!  I had surgery in Mexico in 2006 and again in 2008.  Totally deductable.  Plus all my travel expenses, hotel fees, medical expenses for complications, testing in MX, the works.

It depends on your income and such but it's all totally doable!

Yes, I did.  It was medically necessary.

yes.

You can indeed deduct the surgery from your taxes. For federal you can deduct anything above 7.5% of your AGI.

14 pounds lost before surgery. My first ticker is when I hit onderland: this was my goal when I started on this journey.  I want to focus on that right now...once I get there I can reevaluate.

My second ticker is my dream goal. Even if I only visit there for a short time, it would be nice to see that number just once.  I am pretty sure I'll need plastics to hit this goal.

This was a very interesting post! Wondering, even if insurance pays for surgery can you still deduct travel, hotel, meds and supplements? Hmmm

yes, but you can only claim what the insurance DOESN'T pay. Otherwise you would be double dipping.

Thanks...

Yep, I deducted mine, or rather the accountant that does my taxes, did last year.  My surgery was a 'package' type deal and over $18,000.00.

I'd check with a professional, because it's really worth it.
