This is the fist I am aware of this and new to OH. Can you explain what is happening with facebook and how to change the settings. If you do not use your real name does it link still or does it link because when you registered you did with your name. Would making a fake name stop it from linking to facebook?
" The problem is Karen from what I understand ANYONE can post any other person's posts WITHOUT THEIR PERMISSION OR EVEN KNOWLEDGE to facebook and the other social networking sites . "
This gets more disturbing the more I read about it. I already made one post on the DS forum. This is one for the board. I DO NOT WANT TO SHARE MY WLS EXPERIENCE WITH THE WORLD !!!!
my sites, my thoughts and experiences are for those who I feel understand and care for me, even then I don't share everything with them. There are some things only fellow WLS people can understand.
not everyone on FB knows I had a DS. The majority doesn't know what a DS is, let alone an RNY or lap band.
Although this is not a private site. It is specialized. All I need to see is a thread I posted in added to FB and have a comment about my weight etc. posted from some asshole. That would do serious damage to my self esteem. Having spent the better part of my life obese or SMO.
This is a journey for those who understand. Please take us off FaceBook, Twitter, etc.
With all the ads I see flashing around this post, you can't be that strapped monitarily. And if you are, add a feature so we can block our posts from appearing in said places.

Why do you think congress passed the HIPAA law?
he Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) of 1996 (P.L.104-191) [HIPAA] was enacted by the U.S. Congress in 1996. According to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) website, Title I of HIPAA protects health insurance coverage for workers and their families when they change or lose their jobs. Title II of HIPAA, known as the Administrative Simplification (AS) provisions, requires the establishment of national standards for electronic health care transactions and national identifiers for providers, health insurance plans, and employers. This is intended to help people keep their information private, though in practice it is normal for providers and health insurance plans to require the waiver of HIPAA rights as a condition of service.

The Administration Simplification provisions also address the security and privacy of health data. The standards are meant to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the nation's health care system by encouraging the widespread use of electronic data interchange in the U.S. health care system.

I posted this on the "other" thread about this, thought I would share it here for those who don't understand what is going on...
Heh, not only can you share with facebook, you can also share with myspace, twitter, digg, wordpress and over 200 other sites and services. I tend to agree with others who think that this is not cool.
Yes, you could search google and find this place, if you wanted... but most people wouldn't. You could post a link to this forum anywhere, but most people wouldn't. The main reason people would search for this site, was for support and knowledge on WLS. The trolls were kept to a minimum.
What I do see happening now, is an influx of people who have no reason being here, some of which will come here strictly to ridicule us because of something embarrassing we posted here, or just come here to call us fat and tell us how lazy we are because we had to have WLS. I honestly don't care what most people think, but I know some on here do. I know some have more timid personalities than mine and it will keep them from posting their stories and experiences here and we will all lose out in the process.
I mean, look, it's already happening. People are removing their pics, making their profiles private and not posting. If OH wants to alienate their target demographic to make a few bucks, then don't expect people to stick around. I have seen it happen before. People will find a new place to meet and chat, and in a short amount of time, everything can change.
I guess we will just have to wait and see.

Although I agree with all of you about your right to privacy, I think in today's "facebook" society you are going to run up against this kind of thing over and over. Once you put anything out there on any site you are putting it out there for the world to see. I don't do facebook, but not because of privacy issues. I just feel it will start to take up too much of my time and just become one more reason to sit on my ass in front of a computer doing nothing. But then I still send cards and letters in the snail mail too as I think it is sad to not do that any more. E-cards are my pet peeve!
I don't put anything on here anywhere that I wouldn't want someone somewhere to find. That is why I don't use my pic for an avatar or use my last name anywhere. I do have pics on my profile, and if someone sees them on some other site and figures out who I am, oh well. I'm sure I'll survive.
Facebook is a dangerous entity but I know it is a big part of today's society. There are some I work with that have gotten in trouble for posting sensitive info on there that turned out to be a HIPPAA violation. Many use FB as a means of communication kind of like the phone, but you have to realize that it is a completely public "phone" conversation! So is anything on here. It's too bad that that is today's reality, but it is.
