before you had your surgery...

did anyone try to tell you that you don't need surgery and you can just do it on your own.  And that surgery is the "LAZY" way out?  I am getting this from a lot of my family members.  I know NO ONE understands that this is one of the HARDEST decisions a person has to make.  Just wondering if anyone else has gone through this?

I am doing it for ME not anyone else.  So they can say what they want!!  I am just getting tired of hearing it!!  I am NOT gonna change my mind for ANYONE!!!  This is what I want to do!!  And I know I will NEVER regret it!

I haven't had anyone tell me I was lazy.... but I had many people tell me they knew someone who died... be careful... I just stopped talking about it... actually I didn't really talk about it at all until 3 days before my surgery... by then I had made up my mind... and nothing they could have told me would have changed my mind.

I'd just stop talking about it... don't worry they'll come around... now that I've lost 66 pounds, no one is talking bad about me anymore!

Yes, I got it from my sig other...he said...can't I just yell at you and you do WW or lean Cuisines?
He see the problem now.   Trouble no one understands that food can be an addiction, just like drugs or alcohol.   I was bvery open with everyone around me and let them in on everything...even when it was a little much......   they witnessed the "foamies" and that was all it took for most of them to change their outloo...it isn't easy.

The biggest thing is ...I DID IT FOR ME.... afteryears of indicision...it was time for me!!!!

It was HARD..no doubt...nothing easy about it......and I was lucky...no complications or problems...
I sit here 170 lbs lighter...below my goal weight and I can say....I wish I had been ready sooner...my life is SOOOOOOOO good right now.

You'll be in my thoughts ..... you are not alone....

Not one person.  I think in my case, my friends and co-workers were probably relieved that I was doing something to improve my health and that I was a ticking bomb at 432 lbs.  They know how many times that I did diets, etc. over the years and they  knew that this was more of a last resort for me.  I really must say I have had 100% support from everyone around me - I am very lucky.

Unfortunately, every one has an opinion and they will share it with you regardless if you REALLY want to hear it.  Just do the fake smile and change the subject.  And this will be the best thing to happen to you.  Good luck!

Yes, kind of...

No one called it the lazy way out, but I certainly heard:
1)it's the easy way out
2) you're not fat enough for surgery (even though I qualified by NIH standards)
3) it's too risky (based on very old data, without an understand of the risks of not losing the weight)
4) WLS doesn't work - from a bariatrician
5) diet and exercise...(been there done that for the last 35+ years)

I've bloged about those experiences as I was making my decision (see signature for my blog). I'm here to say that that in a few weeks, I will hit my 4 year "bandiversary" and I've been at a normal healthy weight since late 2007.  I chose surgery to finally win my battle with my weight;  I work hard at it and it works for me!

Yes they did tell me that and I TOLD MYSELF THAT, until last summer when I was 280 pounds of high blood pressure, high cholesterol, high triglycerides, knee pain, back pain, couldn't sleep. couldn't breathe and barely had the energy to get through a day of work with NO energy left when I got home.

My WLS was done in November at age 57 (I am 58 now) and I wish I would have done it years ago. It is like a new lease on life for me. I am off 3 of 4 of my medications. I am on 1/4 the amount of blood pressure medication. I can walk, breathe, sleep, have little to no back pain and I AM ENJOYING LIFE!

God gave man a mind and there are brilliant surgeons out there with the expertise to help their fellow mankind improve and lengthen their lives. My doctor told me I probably added 10, if not more years onto my life! I will NEVER apologize for making the most intelligent decision of my life....WLS!!!!!!
All time high...280 in summer of 2009. Approx. 276 when I first weighed in at Cleveland Clinic
Hugs to all in this cool group from Deborah. Hang in there on our healthy path.
