Spasms

Help! I am 9 days RNY surgery post-op. Last night, I was awakened by horrific spasms in my back and they have continued through today. Someone on another board thought it could be low potassium. I did try mashing up a banana and ate part of one, knowing that probably wasn't enough to do anything. Has anyone else suffered with back spasms? How long did they last and what did you to do relieve them?  Thanks!

Pain like that is not normal and you need to contact a doctor.

I was having spasms but not in my back. They were in my legs and feet. The dr. told me It could be low potassium or start of dehydration. Now since it was very painful, he took some blood to see which one or both. That was done one thursday. I haven't heard anything yet. I did start drinking more water and eating more mushy food that has potassium in it. My spasms have gone done and I don't have them that much right now. You might be suffering from the same, so the banana was a start. I drink G2, they have potassium in it and is low calorie.
I hope this helped. GOOD LUCK! S/N If it gets to bad I would call the Dr. or goto the emergency room.

The best thing about the future is that it comes one day at a time...

I occasionally get horrible spasms in my back in addition to nausea and violent vomiting.  For me, it's a symptom of dehydration.  I suggest you seek medical attention to guide you in the best course of action!

You need magnesium and quite a bit of it. You can get it in capsule form and just open capsule in your protien drink. This will definitely help.
Take care
