WLS after mild heart attack????

Last Thursday, I had a mild heart attack.  I had 100% blockage caused by a blood clot.  The cardiologist also put in 2 stents.  The damage was very minimal...PTL.
I am 43 y/o diabetic with high tryglicerides (sp?) and blood pressure (very well controlled with meds)
My husband mentioned to the dr. that I was looking into WLS.  The cardiologist said that the incident Thursday put a kink in that idea.  I'm not for sure what he means.  Am I no longer able to have WLS surgery since I had a mild heart attack?  Any info is greatly appreciated!

Only your cardiologist and a weight loss surgeon can answer that for you.

Please speak to them both and get details.  Write down what they tell you.

Wishing you the best in your recovery and I hope you are able to one day have the surgery.

I was over 71 years old when I was sleeved, several years after having two stents installed in my heart, and being diabetic for over 20 years.

My Bariatric surgeon required me to get cardiac clearance before he would perform the surgery.  The cardio folks had me take some stress tests, and gave the approval for the surgery.

This was over 3 years ago, and the resultant weight loss has improved my heart health tremenduously.  No more high blood pressure meds, big reduction in diabetic meds, big reduction in cholesterol meds, etc.

Discuss your situation with your cardio and bariatric teams, and follow their advice.

Good luck, and hugs,

Fred

The day I had WLS my surgeon also performed WLS on another patient who was about your age at the time.  His cardiologist was in the operating room for the entire surgery.  Only your cardiologist and bariatric surgeon can answer that question.

Wishing youy well...

I'm jealous Phred, I  had to stay on my blood pressure meds after my weight loss, but then I've only lost 110 lbs, needed to lose 140.. maybe i can get off if i lose another 20 lbs..but hardly doubt it.  100 % blockage is way to scary for me to go through with wls and only stents to help it. I had double bypass open heart surgery..I've been through it all, i wouldnt feel very comfortable having wls with only stents. I've had a heart attack.

also I've talked with other heart patients that say that stents work better with men more than women. thats why i had to get 7 stents and still wasnt working for me, ended up having open heart surgery , this is a very serious matter when it comes to heart vessel blockage.. I had 90 and 95 % blockage

I had a heart attack and triple bypass 6 years ago. I was fat, lazy and totally out of shape. I did not learn my lesson and was headed for a short life. 3 1/2 years ago I made a decison to change my life and had Lapband surgery. It transformed my life. I am now very active. my cardiologist says my heart health is excellent, I eat healthy and have been at my current weight for 2+ years.

I do know of people who have had a heart attack and cardiac surgery and then had WLS. A friend who just had minor (if there is such a thing) heart caths had to wait 6 months. I suspect that your surgeon will dictate what that wait is. I believe it is more about letting your heart heal. I can't imagine it preventing surgery unless your heart problem is complicated.

I am proof that you can have bariatric surgery 2 years after a heart attack and do quite well. Best of luck on your journey and improvement in health.

no longer after i replied to your post, was watching our local news they brought up a topic of stents , talking how stents do not work any better than medication for heart desease.. glad i was able to see this on the local news , and not just from other heart patients.
