Long-term effects of WLS - how far out does data go?

I am researching WLS and whether it is a good option for me. To those who have done the research, can you point me in the right direction to find data on how people are doing 15-20 years out after WLS? Is the answer that there is no data because the procedures have not been around long enough? I am 49 and would like to know what to expect when I'm in my 60's 70's and beyond if I have this surgery.

Thank you in advance for any advice/input you can provide.

You should find plenty of data on the RNY, DS and LapBand.  The VSG is fairly new, so you may get 5 yrs of data, maybe a little more.  The rest you should be able to get 20+ yrs

Thanks Valerie! Any idea where I would look for the data? I'm just starting out researching, and so far I'm not sure which method I will go with.

Google is a great place to start.  Go with the entire names

Roux en Y
Gastric Bypass
LapBand
Realize Band
Duodenal Switch
Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy

Also go to MedLine. Lots of studies are there, at least the abstracts. But often links to the rest of the article as well.

Thanks everyone! I had not heard of Medline or Proboards before. Looks like I will be spending even more time reading online data. I just want to be as informed as possible!

Sherylanne...the others have plenty of data but what others failed to tell you about the VSG is that while the data for WLS only goes back 6 years, it's been done as a surgery for over 100 years as a way of handling other issues...it's just the "new" kid on the block for WLS.
