I had an RNY in 2004 and lost 110lbs. I kept the weight off until I had my hystercetomy in 2009. Now I have regained 55lbs. I am looking into the band over bypass and I am woundering if anyone here has had it done?

Tammy T

Good Morning all, well I have been away for a few months and it shows. I have gained 7 lbs. What a roller coster ride. But today is a new day and I am going to get back on track. I just found out my daughter is scheduled to have surgery on July 8th. I am so happy for her.

You could  not pay me to get a band.  The complication rate is so high and the success rate is so low.

Why do you think you gained weight back?  Are you eating large portions and hoping the band would give you more restriction?  Have you had a scope to check out your pouch and stoma?

Kelly yes I can eat larger portions and I have had a scope. My pouch and stoma have stretch and that is why I can. I have been eating heathly and trying to eat smaller portions but it does not seem to be helping with the weight.

OK, if they've both stretched, you probably do need some sort of revision.  I know some people do well with the band, but it seems like so many do not.  Have you talked to your surgeon about all your options?  Have you thought of maybe revising to the DS?

You need to ask this on the lap band board...there are MANY (BOBS)  and doing very well, the band works great for those who follow safety guidelines and rules.

It has worked great for me 7 years.

Good luck

Have you had a mechanical failure of your pouch diagnosed, Tammy?

If not, there are many vets here who have had success with losing significant regain by getting back to their prescribed RNY lifestyle.

Tammy - IMO - the only reason to get the BOBP if your stoma is really streached.

SOOOOOOO disagree.  As a BOB, I would say the results are more in your favor if your pouch has stretche and your stoma is still intact and not enlarged.  That way you get new restriction before the food goes into your "RNY pouch" and takes a bit to pass to the intestines bc your stoma ISN"T stretched.

 Hey, Tammy. Good morning!

Yes, the suggestion to stop by the Band Board is a good one, as it is probably the best place to find the BOB crowd.

You need to keep in mind, though, if just general overeating is the root issue, you need to address that before you think about ANY revision, band or otherwise. Also, while there have been successes with both the band and BOB, the band is still a mechanical device. It is possible to have it NOT work for any number of reasons, many of which may not be of your own doing. Watching what you eat, exercising, etc. are, of course, vital, but you want to make sure that you have a surgeon who is exeperienced and well-versed in banding, especially BOB, to make sure that it's put in correctly.

I've had a lot of success with the band and still would believe I would not have done as well with another procedure, but I always suggest that people evaulate their lifestyle, eating habits, etc, compare all the procedures and then choose the one that will give them the best chance for success.

Best of luck to you!

Bette
