So I am going to my very first appointment this Monday June 25th. It is just to take my height and weight and see if I am a good candidate for WLS. Can anyone tell me what happens after this? will I be asked to lose 10% of my weight? That is what I think is going to happen. Why do they have that rule? My BMI is 43..so I hope they consider me a good person for the surgery. Does anyone have anything to add to help me understand what it is all about. I am just going into this blind.

It's going to depend on your surgeon and your insurance. Some insurance companies require a pre-op monitored diet attempt, some don't. Some specify a specific weight loss per centage, some don't.

Neither my insurance nor my surgeon required any sort of pre-op diet or weight loss. (My surgeon actually said "I'm sure that if you could lose weight, you'd have already done it.") The only sort of re-op 'diet' I did was clear liquids the day before surgery, and nothing after midnight.

That"s right, it depends on your insurance. mine requested 6 months of medical supervised diet, psychological evaluation, nutritional evaluation, bloodwork, and a gallbladder ultrasound. I am sure you are a candidate for the surgery, good luck:-)

I just went for my height/weight check this week. Next up is my physical with the bariatric group in Aug., even though I had my regular physical 2 weeks ago. After the physical is when I get referred out to behavioral and nutrition classes. I'm also signed up to do a bariatric fitness bootcamp that meets 2x p/wk for 5 weeks.
Check with your insurance. I have to do 3 months of supervised diet and fitness.
All the best!
