Hi there,

I keep reading people's posts about a 5 day pouch test.  I have never heard of this.  Can anyone explain what it is to me and why you are doing it?

thanks

Its not a test its a diet  .. and its supposed to shrink your pouch . Personally I couldn't diet before this and won't do it now .

Does my pouch still work?
Have I broken my pouch?
Have I ruined my tool
?

These are questions many weight loss surgery post-ops find themselves asking occasionally during their journey. Perhaps it feels like we can eat more food or we know that we are eating more food. Sometimes these questions are asked when there has been a weight regain.

This is the 5-day plan that I have developed and used to determine if my pouch is working and return to that tight newbie feeling. And a bonus to this plan, it helps one get back to the basics of the weight loss surgery diet and it triggers weight loss. Also, it is not difficult to follow and if you are in a stage of carb-cycling it will break this pattern. Sounds pretty good, right?

It's a fad diet for wls patients. Usually used by those who have gained. Personally fad diets didn't work preop I cant imagine doing one post op. Just going back to basics makes more sense to me

I'm with Mrs Litch - there is NO WAY I chose to do this to my body only to return to a cycle of over-eating and dieting.   Most people who do this fad diet do it over and over again - so maybe we should ask how successful is it?

Certainly for someone who has had an RNY (hence the pouch), changing your lifestyle is the cornerstone of it's success and if you haven't learned that in your first 12-18 months and resort to this cycle, I would not be surprised if you were among the people who are not successful long term and by that I mean at goal at 5 years +++

You are so right, Kim.  For many people they never lose that merry-go-round mind set of the elusive perfect diet, do they???  Having the surgery in itself and going to back to basics will never be enough for many of them and I find this incredibly distressing .  Many newbies and seasoned WLS patients need to see this is nothing short of fad dieting and we all know about those.  You will always have your diehard folks who swear by it and after 5 days you are back to square one. Sigh.........Jane

I see that many have answered that the 5 Day Pouch Test is a fad diet.  It is not.  The whole idea is to detox from carbs and get to day 6 which is just good post-op eating habits - the ones we should have developed or lost somewhere along in our hectic lives.  The books are very well written and the re-setting we gain from these couple of days proved to be useful to many of us who feel we've gotten in a bind.

I see you crapped all over the board and then deactivated - hmmm! Not eating carbs for 5 days is not the 5 day pouch test ... No one needs to go back to protein shakes to de-carb FFS - it can be done eating perfectly healthy normal food - that's why it's a stupid fad diet! If you eat right, there is no need to r

Sin each and every one of us needs to do what works for us individually.  you seem to have a way that works for you and that is fantastic.  Thank God.  Keep doing your thing and you will never have to do anything like the 5DPT.

All Best.

You are absolutely right, Zee, I made the decision to have WLS 9 years ago so I'd never have to go on any crazy diets again.   No one gets to morbid obestity by NOT going on tons of yo-yo diets that mess and in some cases permanently damage our metabolism.

I have no problem with other people continuing with their pre WLS lifestyle if that's their choice, but I do feel strongly about people who actively promote that to others when lifestyle change is a perfectly good choice the day you move onto that surgery table.

I feel sad when I see people who are still in their honeymoon period asking about this diet and getting rave reviews from people that use it "from time to time" to reset their pouch - when from a physiology point of view there is no such thing!   It may be a method of de-carbing - and lord knows many of those in maintenance have to give this  go from time to time - but RNY honeymooners in active losing phase really shouldn't be scarfng down white processed carbs enough to need to de-carb.   If that IS happening, they are likely to end up in the high percentage of RNY'ers that never lose to goal and/or start to regain.

I have no comment on VSG'ers like yourself, as I have no experience on whether you are more than less likely to need to de-carb than we...   I suspect our lifestyles are expected to be very very similar ...
