Colon Cleansing

I haven't been on here in awhile... but I knew this was the right place to go for the right advice. :)

I had my Gastric Bypass surgery over 4 years ago and I am really happy to report that I have been doing great, but I have gained about 8 pounds back and I feel a bit sluggish. I still take all my vitamins and supplements but my future hubby does a colon cleanse once every 6 months and I wanted to try one. I heard that sometimes our bodies need a good cleaning out to rid ourselves of bad toxins in our bodies. With me having the surgery.... can I take the same cleanse as my man? or is there one that works better for us wls patients? Thanks in advance for any advice!! :)

Generally, I'm quite skeptical of the claims of ambiguous "bad toxins" in the body. Your kidneys are designed to filter all the waste out of the body, that's what they're there for. If you really want to get your kidneys working, you can drink lots of extra water, and make sure you're getting enough insoluble fiber, but anything other than that could be dangerous-- not to mention a waste of money.

I never really thought of doing one... I was just going to try one cause my fiance says they help him out a lot. But... a friend of mine that had the surgery as well, recommended this water recipe..... sounds a lot better to me!

Skinny Body Fat Flush and Detox
1 cucumber
1 lemon
2 limes
1 bunch of mint

Slice them all and divide the ingredients between four 24 oz water bottles and fill them up with filtered water. Drink daily Not only does this taste delicious and help flush fat, but it also counts toward your daily water intake!

Lemons: Help in the absorption of sugars and calcium and cuts down your cravings for sweets.

Cucumbers act as a diuretic and flush fat cells. It is alkalizing to the body (if you have an alkaline body, no diseases can live there), and increase your energy levels.

Limes promote a healthy digestive tract.

Mint is a natural appetite suppressant that also aids in digestion

Those are all good things to add to water... but the alkaline body = no disease screams BS. Your body fights hard to keep your blood slightly alkaline (pH 7.35 to 7.45), and nothing you eat will alter that significantly. Going TOO alkaline (aka Alkalosis) can actually put you in a coma, which is kind of a problem. Any other claims of an alkaline diet preventing disease have not been supported by medical research.

Bottom line: lemon/lime/cuke sounds yummy... but it's not going to prevent cancer. Hooray skepticism! :)

You make a lot of sense... something to think about. Believe me, I never believe everything I read..... lol Thanks for your reply...

The water recipe does sound refreshing on a hot summer day though, :).

Heck yes! And I love putting cucumber and mint in a water bottle to spray on my face in the summertime, especially here in Arizona where we get 115-degree days!!

Unless you're going for a colonoscopy, you don't need a "cleanse."  Leave your butt alone. You can cause far more problems than you will get as benefits.

LOLOL!   When I first read this thread, I thought it was going to be about one of those fancy enemas ...
