6 months post op & pregnant

I just got a positive pregnancy test last night. I am just a week shy of being 6 months post op & have no idea where to begin. Very unexpected & beyond terrified.

I reached out to an obgyn & my surgeon. I have yet to hear back from either one. I've just got so many questions & do not know the answers. Should I be jumping on a prenatal right away? Get off my current vitamins? Take more supplements of something else?

How should I be eating? right now i'm at 500-800 calories a day & a very low carber (20 grams at most). Should i be adding back in carbs? increasing calories?

I do not want to jeopardize my health or this pregnancy anymore than I'm sure I already have. :(

First of all, congratulations!

Add folic acid immediately, your current vitamin regime (2 multis, iron, calcium, b12, d3 etc) should be fine.   Continue to eat your prescribed diet.

Babies are parasites, it will be your health that will be the challenge - but you are not the first and won't be the last.  Hopefully, this will be a teachable moment for the ladies on this board!!!!

Take a deep breath. You have NOT jeopardized this pregnancy! You're going to be ok!!

I'm a year and a half out of surgery and 24 weeks pregnant. It's not easy, but you CAN do it! Obviously your OB and surgeon will be the best resource, but here's what I've learned from my medical team:

  • If you're currently in the "overweight" category, your goal will probably be to maintain your weight rather than to gain. But if you DO gain, it's not the end of the world! You'll still have your tool after you give birth, and you can get back to weight loss.

  • You'll need to add (probably) about 300 calories per day for the baby. NOT as much as you'd think! And it can be perfectly healthy food too.

  • Nausea and food aversions can be really hard to deal with. I never threw up, but I was queasy 24/7 until week 14 or 15, and even now I have a very hard time with meat. Find things your stomach can tolerate, even if it involves a few carbs (I had good luck with whole-grain toast and peanut butter), and you can adjust further down the line as your stomach settles.

  • Add a folic acid supplement and maybe DHA to your current vitamin setup. You don't want to double-up on vitamins because too much vitamin A can cause problems. Your OB will probably run bloodwork to see how everything stands, and s/he can make recommendations or adjustments afterwards.

This may sound weird, but it was actually really reassuring to me-- there are PLENTY of women who drink, smoke, or whatever before they find out that they're pregnant, and they can go on to have babies who are totally ok. A few weeks of a low-cal diet is NOT going to hurt the baby, and at least you're not doing crack, right? ;)

I was hooked on the Preggers board after I found out I was!!

I hit what I thought was a stall, only to find out I was pregnant.

My son was born, healthy & happy!! Amen. ( He was a little 5lb. bag of sugar!!) Life happens, are you at goal as yet? or were you? I never made it to goal? do I now blame it on my pregnancy? I blame it on Life happening to me, & I am a single mother too, I lost focus on me & my weight & I became a great mother. I am still a great mother, but I have dedicated some of my time once again, to trying to Lose some weight,& 8 yrs. later make it to "a" goal. It's hard, so if you lose your way, find again as quickly as possible.

I was of course worried about my weight? & gaining more so, but I had too right!! for my baby right? well I did, but only 13lbs. & I am heavier now, then back then. My son is 6 yrs. old. now. I am 8 yrs. post-op & in the process of trying to lose a regain of 30lbs. & More = to 50lbs. that I need to shed like yesterday.

For whatever reason wls makes a woman so fertile! I was happy but , scared, shocked and surprised all at the same time. You'll be fine and you can get back to losing more weight after your bundle of joy arrives!! Congrats!! if the whole ordeal does not consume you altogether as it did me!

Thank you all for being very supportive. I apperciate the words of advice and clearance. I spoke with my obgyn & my surgeon. All gave me the support I was looking for. However, 2 days later it was determined that I just had a chemical pregnancy. of course, I will try my best to not get pregnant anytime soon, but i'm a bit bummed. Heres to future planning though! :)

Sorry for the disappointment, but use this reprieve to lose all your excess lbs to a normal weight so you can be the healthiest mummy you can be!

The good news is that health outcomes for moms and babies after major weight loss are WAAAAY better than when we're obese, so that can be another good motivator to hit goal and then try again!

You might want to ask your OBGYN about different birth control options before then. Lots of people here have good experiences with IUD's (myself included), or things like the Depo shot to make 99.9% sure the kid doesn't show up until you're ready!
