I was recently told that once you have gastric bypass surgery, you can never have an NG tube inserted under any cir****tances. Is this true?
Why not?? If someone inserts one in an emergency situation while you are unconscious, what happen to you???
Hi Pamela,
I am far from an expert but from what I understand that if that happens and they are unaware that you have had RNY surgery the tube could go right through your stomach pouch and out the other side. That is why it is so important that we wear a medic alert bracelet that says.....RNY GASTRIC BYPASS......NO BLIND NG TUBE......NO NSAIDS
If you haven't bought you one yet....you might want to consider doing so soon. None of us ever knows when we could be in a accident with no one around us that knows that we have had WLS. It is something to think about.

Thanks, Vivian and all *****sponded. Now, where do you suggest getting a medic alert bracelet, that you can fit on all that info?
If you go to my site, I have a page with links to Medical Jewelry sites. I got mine at American Medical ID

Very important stuff! I never take it off

NO thats not true. What it says is do not insert 'blindly'. A heath care professional can do it blindly or with a scope; it CAN be done with a scope. I think thats the 'reason' for the medical braclets - to warn EMS not to do it if your unconscious they will see the braclet and be warned. If done blindly; runs a risk they will puncture your new tummy.
Just as a warning-luckily I was conseous at the time. I had a Lauren's Hope Medical ID bracelet that said all my surgery info, including no blind NG tube. Ummm-they didn't notice it b/c it DIDN"T look like an medical id bracelet. I had emergency surgery b/c prednisone put a hole in my pouch. I had them write no blind NG on EVERYTHING! What a scare!
