Protein intake.

Hello all,

I know this is a truly only a question my doctor could answer but I am gonna ask here anyways.

How long after surgery did people stay on the high protein intake before  they started cutting back?

I am a year out and still taking in a 100 grams of protein between food and supplemental protein.

I am nine years out and have stayed at 100-120 grams a day.

I think the answer is forever. My surgeon recommends 60-80 grams although after my most recent lab work they told me 70.

Hey neighbor! I still aim for 80+ a day and I'm nearly 1 year postop.

I would base it on your bloodwork. If you're levels are in the normal range, I would keep consuming 100 grams of protein.

My surgeon says we do not need as much protein as he used to recommend. In this article, he says the average woman needs 44 grams of protein and the average man needs 54. He told me I only need 40-60, but my protein levels are good now so I will stay the course (I consume about 100 grams a day).

It depends on your labs and how far you are from surgery. And what you getting the proteins from.

I used to get 100-150 gr a day.. My labs still show low normal. Lately - I get app60-80 gr but from real food - eggs, meat, nuts and I increased fat - and now my proteins are either mid or high normal.

Even your doc can't (or shouldn't) give you a concrete answer on this.  Your lab results should tell you if you are getting enough, too much, or just enough protein.  Those with malabsorptive procedures (RNY, DS) need that protein while restrictive only procedures like band and sleeve may be able to wean off a little.  Again....labs will tell you.
