Steroid Shots

I had gastric bypass surgery in 2015. My doctor said no steroids. I have been having shoulder pain and am scheduled to go to an orthopedic doctor. I have learned doctors have very little understanding of what medications I can and can not take. My primary care physician encouraged me to ask about a steroid shot. Is that a safe option since I can't take NSAIDS or oral steroids?

Steroid shots are ok in moderation, but not NSAIDS. I've had cortisone shots in my knees a few times, and compared to any other treatment, they are pretty miraculous.

Steroids are what we need for some pain and conditions. I get steroid shots when needed and take oral steroids when needed.

NSAIDS are what I refuse to take.

Can't speak to whether steroid shots are okay with bariatric surgery but I have had a lot for chronic tendinitis in multiple joints including the shoulder. They help, it's amazing. Downside, the results are typically only a few months, and the steroid which helps with inflammation can also cause damage to tendons. Usually you can only have shots a few times. That said, the shoulder issue I had was helped almost immediately by a steroid shot, and went away never to come back from that one treatment. Other joints did not have the same wonderful outcome.

I've had 4 cortisone shots since my surgery. No problems as far as WLS goes.

I am bone on bone in both knees and have become very active since surgery. I get steroid shots in my knees about every 3-4 months since August last year when I had surgery with no issues. I have had to take oral steroids for my asthma twice since surgery - my bariatric team only wants notice if I need to stay on oral steriods for more than 10 days so that they can then work out a plan with my pulmonary doc who treats my asthma. But I've never had to be on more than 10 days. NSAIDS are what you need to watch. The shot to your shoulder should have no effect on your stomach.

Keep on losing!
