I had RNY 03/02/2004. I lost 100 lbs and gained back 40. I had many, many complications. I almost died from pancreas problems the first month. I battle anemia, ostioporisis and many other health problems.

In 2014 my 36 year old daughter passed away a week after Gastric Sleeve Weight-Loss Surgery. Her belly was full of blood the cause of death was listed as unknown.

In 2016 my 55 year old sister died a month after weight loss surgery. She ate a sub sandwich fell asleep, vomited and aspirated the vomit. The cause of death was listed as aspiration.

Neither of these deaths were listed as a result from weight loss surgery.

You show know the facts before making this decision.

I am sorry for your losses. I can understand, between those deaths and your own struggles, why you would feel compelled to warn others away.

However, this surgery doesn't guarantee us anything other than a chance to get healthier through weight loss. If we don't do our own part, regain and/or health problems will occur. And, because we are not a healthy segment of society to begin with, consequences related to this decision occur.

I know I was heavily informed of these consequences before I elected WLS and I'm sure your sister and daughter were as well. We just never think they will happen to us or we take the risk for the possibility of a better future.

Again, I'm sorry for your losses. However, I know that if I didn't have RNY, I would be over 400lbs by now, immobile due to pain, and I definitely wouldn't have a beautiful 18 month old daughter. I guess you also need to think of why they elected WLS and how they decided those risks paled in comparison to what they were facing without it.

I understand completely. I had the same options and decided for surgery. I just wish they told the truth about the number of deaths--it is much higher than explained.

My surgeon did my surgery even though I was severely anemic. 30 Days in the hospital with pancriititus and my iron level at 4. No one told me I needed a blood transfusion. I would have died if I didn't follow up and do my own research. The hematologist was shocked.

Of course if I did die maybe my daughter and sister would have avoided the surgery.

Wow. Every surgeon should provide their short and long term surgery stats. The very reason I chose my surgeon is that he has never had a death in his 20+years of practice. ANd he provided all the percentage numbers for short and long term complications his patients have faced. I'm sorry you had such terrible losses and I'm glad we didn't lose you too. Looks like you've gotten some great advice and hopefully, support on here.

Eating a sub sandwich a month after surgery seems like a sound weight loss strategy. Not sure why she didn't wake up after the inevitable vomiting. Do you think they prayed before surgery?? I think the better bet would be research the surgeon and follow his/her post op diet plan

She didn't wake up because the doctor gave her pain pills. Oxicoton=poison.

Wow, why was she on oxytocin? Was there a malpractice case here? So sorry this happened.

I am surprised that she got to eat a sub too a month out. I was full broths and MAYBE mushy food. Subs aren't mushy
