Night Sweats Normal/Not?

Hey Everyone,

I am almost 2 weeks post op and I have been having night sweats so bad I have to get up about 2:30 every morning, shivering to change pjs, they are soaked. I am only taking pre - surgery med prescription for Cymbalta, Multi Vitamin and Melatonin.

This is an issue obviously because it is disruptive to sleep, and of course my poor husband who I am wearing out trying to turn off ceiling fan, keeping space heater beside the bed (for shivering) and trips for new pjs.

However, dehydration is a huge concern because despite all of my efforts I am only up to 56ozs of water daily. (I am full liquids now)

I left a message for my surgeon's nurse but I am guessing it is a post op thing and not much I can do...

Help OH friends~

I was mostly cold for the immediate post-op period, but I am in menopause. My usual menopausal night sweats didn't come back for 6-8 months. But WLS does mess with you normal hormone balance so I would guess that's what is affecting you.

I'm almost 5 years post-op and I still have periods of time where this happens. I might also be pre-menopausal, so it's unclear if that could be a factor for me.

It can be hormonal.

Or - that happens to me a lot when my blood sugars dropps too low in a middle of the night.

I try to remember to get a teaspoon or 2 of creamy nut butter before bed. That keeps my BS much more stable during the night.

I use all cotton night pajama or a nightgown. I keep extra set in my night stand, and change if needed. Flannel sheets offer enough warmth, so I seldom use a blanket on top of that. Sometimes I use my cat. If I am really cold, shivering, he comes with me under the sheets. He is big and fluffy and a great portable heater. We are pretty sure he loves it also.

I occasionally get soaking night sweats. It never occurred to me that it could be low blood sugar. Thanks for bringing that up!

I love the kitty-blanket -- way better than a ho****er bottle or electric blanket!

Could be a sign of your body trying to fight infection. Might also be your body working hard to heal things. Good move to have called your surgeon. They may want to grab some blood work to ere on the side of caution. Hope you feel better.

I did have an infection in the hospital, and yes I hope it is a sign of healing.

Thanks for your input everyone. My surgeons office sent me to an endocrinologist who took a TON of blood to test for everything.

The first thing she said was, "it happens due to the rapid weight loss." However she followed it with the next info.

I take Levothroxin for low thyroid and she said to "double my dose" and they would call with the results of the blood work.

I will do my best to pop back and let everyone know if there is any follow up information.

UPDATE:

I got the blood work results yesterday and according to my hormone levels I am menopausal.

However, my catecholamine level was also off, the endocrinologist wants me to discontinue my anti depressant: Cymbalta/Duloxetine for 3 weeks and then repeat a urine test.

Note for reference:

I have been on antidepressants for 9 years after a suicide attempt landed me in the hospital for 8 days. I have changed meds, changed dosages but consistently take them exactly as prescribed. I still have occasional lows, usually winter (seasonal affective disorder) but nothing I cannot handle with the help of my safety person.
