Has anyone been diagnosed with Barrett's Esophagus?

Hi all, Any help is greatly appreciated. This question is for a friend of mine who is a VSG patient and has recently been told that she is going to undergo a revision to RnY due to being diagnosed with Barrett's Esophagus. Have any of you had this diagnosis?

Is it like being diagnosed with GERD?

it's worse than GERD. It's what GERD can lead to if it's not dealt with. Good call to have a revision to RNY...that often improves - if not outright cures - GERD.

Thank you! I didn't think it was the same, but there are similarities. I really hope the revision helps her. I was reading HALA's response and hoping that she is not consuming something that can potentially cause the same issues

Check the revision board. VSG to RNY is THE revision du jour and most commonly for GERD.

Thank you, I posted in the VSG board but I haven't seen if there are responses yet. Going to look next.

I had RNY and a few years ago my insides got severely irritated and I developed GERD. So for me RNY was not a cure for it.

A scope and biopsy revealed a had Barrett's Esophagus on a small portion on my esophagus. The regular OTC PPI did not help, even when I took 2 or 3 a day. My doc put me on Rx strong (and very expensive) PPI, Dexilant. I had to take 60 mg x2 a day initially. Then 60mg daily for a few years. I am trying to wean myself off that and now I am on 30mg a day.

My doc and I believe that food allergies- sensitivities can cause that. Acid is made in our body as a response to histamine. Either histamine naturally present in foods, or histamine our body produces in response to foods. That would also cause inflammation and changes in tissues. Avoiding some foods that are naturally high in histamine (i.e. red wine, aged meats) may help, plus avoiding foods that my body histamine response to that is high may really help.

VSG can create a high-pressure area, and cause GERD. Unfortunately converting to RNY may not fix all the issues. It helps most people, especially the ones that have acid floating back into the esophagus.

Barrett's Esophagus is not to be ignored. Hopefully her insurance would approve her revision surgery.

Thank you so much! It's really interesting that food sensitivities/allergies may play a huge role. I really hope it helps her. I will pass this information along to her

Barrett's esophagus is pre cancer.

I had Barrett's prior to having my DS. I was put on a course of Nexium for six months, rescoped, Barrett's resolved and I got my DS! This is a serious condition, according to my doctor, it is considered pre-cancerous for cancer of the esophagus.
