How do I control my blood sugar levels on the pre-up diet?

Most surgeons will take you off your diabetic medicines after surgery and then see if you actually need them. The majority of people have diabetes go into remission after surgery and do not need medicines. Your doctor will work with you on that.

I was on insulin during my pre-op diet and it was understood that lows would need to be corrected if need be and I was asked to use glucose tabs and only as many as I potentially needed. I don't actually remember that I needed to adjust them too much. I personally found whey protein to raise my BG quite a bit, so things were a little hairy.

My guess would be that they will have you continue your oral meds and stop insulin all together for the pre-op diet. I was only on insulin so that wasn't an option for me (I have MODY, not Type II).

I am pre-diabetic and I was informed by my surgeon that if I were to be on meds, that I would have most likely been off of them before I left the hospital after surgery. I am doing my best NOT to have to be on meds.

I hope the same for you (That you will not have to leave the hospital, being on diabetic meds. Good luck!

Leaving the hospital off your meds is not always the case. It happens a lot but it's not always, true with RNY and remission of diabetes overall, as well. There are a lot of factors in play.
