Topic: RE: Question about knee pain
Thank you,
I didn't know it wouldn't be genetic if it was anything but RA. I will tell her that and get a clarification.
I went to a family doctor. He thinks its my knees telling me they have had enough with the extra weight. I told him I started going to Curves 6 months ago. He thinks that hoping on them every 30 seconds there is putting too much pressure on them. He wants me to ride the bike or do the elliptical machine instead.
He thinks that it is an injury instead of arthritis. Mainly because of my age and because they both started to hurt at the same time. He prescribed me an anti inflammatory.
He said if we did an x-ray we would most likely see some narrowing, but nothing major.
I'm definitely try some ice,
thanks again... I hope you get some pain relief soon!!!!

Hi Amy....first off unless your mother has RA, the knee issue isn't genetic, so could be an injury.  Ice is the key with knees, especially.  I have one knee that needs replaced and it is the one I have injured repeatedly...the first time at 14 when my skateboard hit a rock and I went ass over teakettle and banged up my left knee and dislocated my left thumb.  That knee has suffered a lot with tobogganing, skiing, softball playing and 26 years of working on hard concrete floors.  Ice your knees to reduce post-injury bleeding into the joint.  The blood destroys cartilage and lost cartilage is the reason many of us need knee replacement surgery.
If you haven't had an injury, it might be time to see the orthopaedic doctor for recommendations.
I am up early this morning due to pain (primarily knee, ITband and back), it runs my life.  You are young, take care of your joints now so pain doesn't run your life.

Topic: RE: Anyone develop arthritis POST surgery as a complication?
I had the JIB surgery in 1979 and had the blind loop syndrome develop within weeks of my surgery. Dealt with it with antibiotics and NSAIDS for years. Kept it under reasonable control. However, began having horrible IBS-type symptoms in 2000 and continued rotating various antibiotics, thinking it was the bacteria. Was finally in 2009 diagnosed with yeast overgrowth and began diet and treatment which lessened symptoms substantially. I rarely take antibiotics now. Take Align daily and a nightly dose of liquid Nystatin to keep the yeast under control. Right now my biggest health challenge is possible neuropathy in my legs and feet. Haven't been to a neurologist yet...but may end up doing so. Very annoying.

Topic: Question about knee pain
I'm 30. My mom has arthritis in both knees. She is 53. She just had a total knee replacement. She needs another one.

I have had mild knee pain for a month or 2. Just a few days ago, it started getting worse.
Pain, swelling, burning and stiffness is getting worse. I couldn't even sleep last night. Even after I took Tylenol arthritis.
The weired thing is it is all of the sudden and in BOTH knees.

Anyone think it is arthritis, or something else???

Any tips, tricks, thoughts are welcome...

Topic: RE: 41 yo and needing a new hip????

I will soon need a hip replacement.  I am waiting to loose all the weight before considering a hip replacement.  I am a little concerned because an orthoperic surgeon told me that I should wait as much as possible before getting a replacement due to the fact that they only last 10 to 15 years.   I will get several opionions come next year.

I don't usually come here but was cruising the forums and thought I'd let you know how easy mine was. I was 54 when I had a total r. hip replacement. At the time I was over 300 lbs. and bone on bone, saw one surgeon who told me he wouldn't even consider surgery till I lost over 100 lbs. yeah sure how was I supposed to do that?! Well found another surgeon in Gresham OR that said no problem, he could do the surgery and the rest was up to me as far as rehab. The surgery was easy enough spent 4 days in the hospital and then went straight home since hubby was able to take care of me and I had PT people come out for a couple of weeks but they said I was doing fine and didn't need them anymore. By 5 weeks post op I was back driving and walking with a cane. So if you are active and determined you should do fine and believe me not having pain anymore made it more than worth anything I went thru with the surgery!

Hi Amy,

I had a hip replacement 6 months after my RNY. While recovering from the hip surgery I was walking with a coffee in one hand and my purse in the other. I was thin and could walk again without a cane!!!! I thought to myself, if I could have had only one surgery, which one would I have taken. As much as I love my WLS and loss, the ability to walk without pain, to hike again, gave me back my life. The hip replacement gave me back my life.

I'm happy to talk to you if you want more info. Good luck!

Topic: RE: Celebrex- I miss it!
My doc just gave me a sample of Celebrex to try for the first time for OA in my hip.  Wow, with one dose I noticed an incredible reduction in the pain.  But I'm a bit freaked out about all the side effects, the black label warning from the FDA and my chances of having a "cardiovascular event"..does that mean a heart attack?  I can't decide if I want to take it, although I haven't had this much OA relief in a long time.
Does anyone know of any drugs with fewer potential side-effects that are safer to take but also offer similar pain relief?

I'm a HIPPIE
Total right hip 5 or 6 years ago. The key to the whole deal is just like wls...find the best surgeon and go for it. My surgeon does only hips and knees. I had to go to a nursing home for 2 weeks, but only because of my size at the time. The worst was getting the right leg into bed since the muscles are cut. Walked with a walker at first, but no big deal.
If you can do wls, you can do the hip for sure. I had the open D/S and it was tougher because of where the cut is. I would not hesitate to have either one again if I needed to.
Best of luck and keep kick'in !!!!
