Topic: 41 yo and needing a new hip????
Hey all....just looking for any advise that you may have for me.
I'm 41yo female, had RNY in March. My high weight was 218 and I am down to 177 today. Getting cardio in has been getting harder and harder due to my right hip.
In 2006 I trained for and completed the Portland, OR marathon. About halfway through our training, I passed out one day from heat exhaustion and fell down a bit of a ravine (thankfully I landed head down so I wasn't "out" too long)! My girlfriends thought I had a heart attack and were getting ready to run for 911....thankfully they were as tired as I was and no one had anything left to sprint for a phone!! In the process I tore my right labrum and have since developed arthritis. I had an arthroscope in 2009 and several steroid injections since then.
I am now stage 4, bone on bone, and just had another injection. This one was of no benefit at all. I'm currently in PT but I just have such limited range of motion I can't even ride a bike without turning my right leg sideways.
Some suggested options are 1: another scope with chondroplasty to encourage fluid development and a cam lesion repair (grind off all the osteophytes) 2: total hip arthroplasty 3: a round to synvisc injections (1 shot a week for 5 weeks) to see if that will also increase fluid in the joint.
Anyone out there have a hip replacement? What was your rehab like? Any suggestions would be appreciated!!

Topic: RE: Celebrex- I miss it!
That's good to know (about the risk of weight gain as a side effect). I will definitely take that into account before taking it again. Right now, (5 days after RNY surgery) I could resume taking it, according to my doctor's instructions, but since I have liquid lortab for pain, I'm going to wait until I need something more and then decide. Maybe I will have lost enough that my joints will be pain free! Wouldn't that be nice?!
Topic: RE: Celebrex- I miss it!
Celebrex does provide some relief for my spinal issues and OA. I stopped taking it before lapband surgery in Nov 0/8. I lost 90 pounds and started taking it again a few months ago during times when I was most active. I have been quite disturbed lately because I have gained 15 pounds over the past few months and my eating habits have not changed and I have been exercising more. It just clicked a few days ago that the start of my weight gain coincides with the time I started back on the celebrex. I spent time this weekend reading post after post of stories from people who have gained weight taking celebrex (considerable in many cases). I just googled celebrex + weight gain. The drug companies always downplay these type of side effects and the insert does say that celebrex may cause unexplained weight gain. I know I will be stopping it immediately and will find out if it is the cause of my weight gain.
Topic: RE: Anyone develop arthritis POST surgery as a complication?
I'm 11 months out from having RNY.... and I've lost 100 pounds to date, but have been having really bad arthritis and joint pain in my wrists, elbows & especially shoulders. Can't take NSAIDS and can't have cortisone shots.... so it's basically pain killers for now. I would like to know if anyone else developed symptoms of arthritis after losing the weight (i had it before due to the weight, but it's 10x worse now). I've consulted with doctors and all my tests are good.... no RA or lupus or gout. I will have to look into the blind loop syndrome.... never heard of it. I haven't been on the boards in quite a while, but searched and found your post....
Topic: RE: Celebrex- I miss it!
I just tried Celebrex yesterday for the first time, having to go off my Etodolac before surgery. My joints were in such pain with nothing but tylenol. I am so glad to have some relief. I expect to be able to use this after surgery. My surgeon prescribed it for me. I'm having RNY on Friday (in two days!)
Topic: RE: Osteoarthritis, Osteoporosis, and a Fused Ankle
Hi. I am new to this forum and was just browsing. Amazing that I found your post - one says when the student is ready the teacher will appear. I had WLS 5 years ago, but got lax and now I am getting back on track. In those 5 years I went from Osteopenia to Severe Osteoporosis, and I also have had Osteoarthritis like, forever. I had back surgery 1983 which did not not help. I found this great doctor who examined and tested me, put me on mega dose of Vit D, I also got back in touch with a bariatric group and am anxious for my first meeting. Anyway - getting off track here. Losing weight has helped my arthritis somewhat (little is better than none). Doc put me on new meds (Forteo, injection) when my bone density test showed the severe Osteoporosis. Objective is to retest in 24 months with goal to have regrown bone. I have relocated this past year and I feel encouraged by finding this great doc and new bariatric group and hope to get back to losing weight and enjoying life again. By the way, I am retired. Sure hope you are feeling better soon, and hope that my insight may have helped you some.

I have this same concern. I'm scheduled for surgery in 6 days and right now my normal day has become such a challenge just to go up and down the two steps of my front door, in and out of my car, to use the toilet... need I go on? I believe that there will be a better day, but I also know there could be some hellish ones before I get there.

When using the biologics you must not use them for 2 weeks before surgery and can't continue them until you have absolutely no open wounds afterwards. That can mean 2 months of no meds--which can equal lots of pain and stiffness from RA. You have to decide if the surgery is worth not taking the meds because you absolutely would not heal properly taking them and would likely get a superinfection.
