Topic: RE: LOW bloodsugar?
Please be very careful. I am 39 months post RNY and been having the most severe problems since 10 months out. Now my symptoms totally bypass the early warning signs straight to seizures or insulin shock (reoccurring black outs). Following the rules still no changes. Not exactly what any of us bargain for is it? All we wanted was a better life. Hope you are doing better than I am. Gods speed.

Insulin resistance is a precursor for diabetes. Was you insulin tested or just your glucose?

80 is not normal. Its subject to your doctors interpretation and education. Most arent as educated on the subject as they would have you to believe. You do not have to drop to 39 or 50 to experience hypogycemic seizures and blackouts also referred to as insulin shock. I know. I am living testamony to it all and have friends that have it to who can back me up. Mine started less than a year out from my RNY. I am now 39 months out and my symptoms have gotten worse that I am considered disabled and am home bound for the most part. I can count one my one hand how often I get out of the house and generally its not a pleasure trip. A doctors visit is never a pleasure trip.by the time I get back home and often before I get back home start having seizures, anxiety attacks and blacikouts. Still no answers. Just sick and tired of being sick and tired. So please anyone who is considering a weight loss procedurej reach and dont take anything for granted and that included your surgeons word. Your never fully informed. Just when you think you have all the information, research even more. Get on other support groups find out everything you can. I am not attempting in anyway to talk any one out of having the procedure done. I have never walked in your shoes, you have the final say. I am speaking the truth that I know of. Had I know what I was up against before I went ahead I can honestly say that I dont think I would do it over again. I sacrificed one form of life for something worse.. Not everyone has problems at least not right away. You could be 10 years out an find out differently. God speed to everyone. I pray what ever you decide you stay healthy and safe.

My endo had put me on insulin too, but this caused me to crash still. I have an appointment at Joslin with Dr Patti who specializes in Gastric Bypass patients with this very issue. Meds she uses are arcarbose and others like that before thinking about sugery. Some people need partial pancreas removal with sucess. If you google Dr Patti and powerpoint her presentation comes up. This problem is making me not be able to work. It is horrible. Im tired all the time.

I have the same symptoms. I cannot eat more than 4 carbohydrates without a spike and then crash. The blood sugar swing causes severe headaches and migraines. My endo wants me to take insulin but I find that the timing of the insulin action and my digestion (RNY2006) don't match up and I get crazy blood sugar results when I try to use the humalog. My endo won't let me take precose because he says I am malnourished already. Four carbs is nothing. I never eat starches or fruit or vegetables. Just cheese, protein and low carb yogurt. Sometimes I will spike with even 4 carbs. I keep losing weight, 102 now, and the less I weigh the fewer carbs it takes to spike my blood sugar. I am seriously considering a takedown (reversal). My surgeon is confident she can do it. I wish I knew of someone who had a takedown for this and if it helped. I wrote that endo at Joslin three weeks ago, but haven't gotten a response and am very discouraged. Has anyone heard of reversal as a treatment for this problem?

How are you doing? I've been thinking about you as I know your date is coming up. I'm thinking of you and praying that all goes well. These days before surgery seem to drag.....I can't believe I'm at 4.5 weeks out. I never thought the day would come!!

I know what you mean when you say you feel "all alone out here" with this. I troll this forum daily to see if there is any activity. I researched my butt off for 9 years trying to find info on the impact of this surgery with Type 1.5's! Virtually nothing. Sometimes it's strange to try and manage all this in a vacuum. Our issues are a bit different. I once had someone say that it must be a lot of work trying to be a pancreas, along with everything else we are. And that made a lot of sense to me.
Thanks for the suggestion. I never exercise without eating first. I usually try to time my exercise to the 2nd hour after a meal when I know I'll be spiking up. It does help. It's the second drop at 5-6 a.m. that is kicking my butt right now. I have to treat with a simple carb and then I live in fear a bit of dumping. But, so far, I haven't experienced that (thank God!). I know I'll find the sweet spot of the right basal dose, but it's going to take a little doing. Just switched to Lantus in the AM this week to see if that helped. Jury is still out on that one. At least my endocrinologist is fabulous and actually texts with me about this. I am lucky to have him!
I think you are doing GREAT!! It's so easy to get focused on the weight loss comparison game. The biggest benefit is your blood sugar improvement on about 25% of what you used before! Congrats - that is a HUGE goal that you've accomplished!! Terry (aka funkyphillygirl)

Wow, Thanks for the replies. I actually have had my blood sugars level out. Things are better. My weight loss not so. Makes me sad, but yet I am happy where I am at. Will still try to get to maybe 135. I do exercise. I have been walking about 2 miles a day. I did start late on my exercising, did start until maybe 6 mos out. My log my food everyday. I am averaging 1100-1200 calories a day. Ok by my surgeon. He is ok with my weight loss.
My insulin levels went from 90-100 units a day to now 25. I do not bolus for meals, if I do my sugar drops horribly.
Deltadawn, I am jealous, you are doing great. Your weight loss is better than mine and your insulin levels are just great. Good job. I have been trying hard not to compare my loss to others as it will just depress me. I am doing everything my surgeon recommends and eating very healthy. So, will try and be happy for what I have and keep trying.
funkyphillygirl, when we exercise it does will play with our levels. you may want to try and have some protein before you exercise to see if that would help with the lows. Good luck to you.
Thanks to the both of you for responding to me. I thought I was all alone in this world and no one liked me

Topic: RE: Question for Type I diabetics
I am 4 weeks post op from RNY - Type 1.5 diabetes for 25 years. 3 orals are gone, 1 injectable gone and much less insulin over all. However, I am still struggling to get my blood sugar stable while exercising an hour a day. I usually drop 100-140 points when I do exercise for an hour, so have to do it after eating and not taking any Novolog. But, the kicker is that I seem to get a second drop about 12 hours later (usually very early morning) from the exercise. With my doctor's guiance, I've reduced Lantus dramatically and am now trying to use it in the AM (vs. at night). Still spiking some highs, so feel like I don't have enough basal coverage.
Is there anyone out there who experiences issues with exercise like this?
Congrats on your great HbA1c!! That's exactly why I did this - hoping for #s like that soon.
