Topic: RE: A1C

My A1C is currently about a 10 and my surgeon says I need to be at least an 8 to get scheduled.  Along with being on Starlix and Januvia I have currently cut out ALL carbs and refined sugar.  It is hard, plus I'm a vegetarian so I've always eaten alot of beans, but now need to limit myself to very little only a couple times a week.

I'm avoiding all styles of pasta, bread, rice, potatoes, etc... just to get my numbers down, and then of course after surgery and in due time I will slowly try and work these things back in.

I'm sticking with just proteins and veggies.  I keep nuts on my desk at work and try to do a protein shake (low sugar, low carb) for both breakfast and lunch.

Good luck to you, but I would definitley keep a food journal and go over it with your nutritionist.

Peace & Blessings... Kelly

I have type II and am having a VSG in October.  I've been taking metformin for a year, I don't have any trouble with it.  With exercise and eating/drinking better, my A1c is around 5.5, but I have peripheral neuropathy and I'm terrified of foot problems and amputation!

Topic: Question for Type I diabetics
I am 11 mos out.  I have been on a insulin pump for 10 years.  For the first 10 mos I didnt have to bolus or take insulin for anything I ate.  Now at 11 mos out, my sugars have started to really fluctuate, I have noticed that I need to bolus for my meals.  I was wondering if it is because my system is no longer malabsorbing ???
Has anyone had any experience with this?  My weight loss has been horrible slow and now with needing more insulin it is even going to harder to lose the weight.  (I have that insulin makes us fat, I hate that I even am diabetic, wahhh, wahhh)
I would love some suggestions that anyone has to offer.  I would like to lose another 10 lbs before my 1 yr out mark.

Thanks in advance everyone,
Debbie

Topic: RE: Hypoglycemia 7 months post op?
I have SERIOUS problems with hypoglycemia.

The very best way I've found to combat it is to avoid carbs as much as possible throughout the day, especially in the AM.

Most veggies are fine, except very high glycemic ones like potatoes, sometimes carrots for me.  Limit bread, especially if it's white bread.

Also, always carry glucose tabs with you just in case.  You usually only need 4-5, just be patient.

Avoid candy, sweets, etc.  For me, if I can avoid carbs throughout the day, I can have a few at night.

Metformin does have side effects for many people, especially gastrointestinal distress (usually diarrhea and some cramping). Sometimes, it only lasts for the first couple weeks, but some folks have it long term and can't continue the metformin.

This is pretty normal - fruit is essentially nothing but sugar (no fat, no protein). Try sticking to lower-sugar fruits like berries, and/or have some protein & fat WITH your fruit (I never eat fruit by itself). Add some cheese, nuts, nut butters, cottage cheese, Greek yogurt, cream...

Fat does not increase glucose levels.

Topic: Blood sugar reaction to fruit post surgery
Hi everyone, Happy Friday!!

OK, I have noticed that when I eat fruit (fresh or canned/no sugar) my blood sugar goes up tremendously for the next test. (I test 4 times a day before each meal and bedtime) If I eat fruit as a snack, watch out, it will be on average 30 to even 80 points higher than if I don't. I don;t remember this before surgery  I know I should have some fruit, should't I?  I try to eat it only a couple of times a week. but I miss it, I really like fruit!  Any thoughts? Any I should maybe avoid more than others?

Thanks!!
