Topic: RE: Approved for Surgery and Scared Out of My Mind
i suffer from blood clots myself and embolisms, so as soon as they got me to my room, theyhad me walking around...i was just a few hrs out of surgery. Just get up and walk as much as you can, my blood sugars were running kind of high but it's just the trauma your body is going through. I'm a week and a half out of surgery and my blood sugars are still running a little high but i'm consistent and pretty much stable.
You will do great and good luck on your surgery. My prayers are with you!

Topic: RE: High blood sugars after surgery?
Yes, stress, especially physical trauma (like surgery) can cause increased glucose levels. I also want to point out, though, to find out EXACTLY what is in the IV you're connected to when you wake up from surgery. Most IVs include SUGAR in some form, and then the nurses can't figure out why the insulin they inject isn't bringing your glucose levels down - how about because you're mainlining SUGAR directly into my blood?! This has happened to many diabetics (myself included) while still in the hospital after a surgery.

Topic: RE: a1c high surgery coming up
In a word: yes. Many surgeons won't operate if your diabetes is truly out of control. Having it be in such a state can reduce circulation, slow healing, and increase the risk of infection.
That said, the definition of "out of control" will vary by surgeon. Mine never said anything to me about my 7.9 and 8.1 A1Cs right before my surgery. Ask your surgeon where s/he wants your A1C to be before they will be willing to operate.

Topic: RE: High blood sugars after surgery?
I had my surgery on July 18, little over a week ago..in the morning went i left to the hospital i was 84 by the time they had me in pre-op i was 283. They took me off my insulin pump and monitor ed me throughout surgery. During my hospital stay, they kept running in the high 200's- 300's. They put me back on the pump....i stabilized. Now that i am home my blood sugers are not perfect but consistent. i cant wait until they are perfect. I still have some running in the 200's, just don't know what to do. I'm averaging about at most about 15-25 carbs a day and still running some high sugars..FRUSTRATING!!!

Topic: RE: adjust ing pump while on pre-op diet
I would deff talk with your doctor, When i was on pre-opp the shakes were making me crash alot but i was not allowed to adjust my basil rate, i just could not to Bolus and or correct, i also think that every Doctor does things different. i was very insulin resitant and i was on my pump wich had to be filled 2 times a day = 600 units and on top of that i was taking 20-30 units of u-500 witch equals another 200-300 units of insulin i was on a lot of insulin and oral meds . no doctor could get me regulated i was seeing specialist on top of specialist. I am 33 years old and got to a point in my life i just could not do this anymore so i decided to have the gastric bypass and i am now 4 weeks and 1 day out and i am doing great,. The night of my surgery i was off my pump and oral meds i just take 15 units @ bedtime for the next couple if weeks and then i will be weened off that too. I just wanted to let yu know what happened with me and i wish you the best of luck...

Sue - Thanks for your supportive words. I guess its just the pre-surgery jitters! I know it is for the best but just afraid of the unknown.
