Hello everyone.  Let me just start by saying I am 9 yrs post op.  VBG / RNY Bypass.   I have maintained my wieght for the last 9 years with not a single problem, except my gallbladder had to come out.

Now a few months ago I started feeling very tired, I was not eating, and just felt weak.  It got so bad on Easter Sunday that I could not get off the couch.  I went to the ER and was admitted to the ICU with diabetic  Ketoacidosis.  I was not diabetic (that I knew) before this.  Noone in my family is either.

Now here is where I could really use some help.  I am on 3 units of NovoLog before each meal and 10 units of Lantus at bedtime.    The Lantus seems to be doing fine.  I am having a problem with Low Blood Sugars after taking the NovoLog.   Within an 1 1/2 to 2 hrs it is dropping bad.  Like down to the 40s.

I know this is a fast acting insulin and I need to eat within 15 minutes.  I am doing that.  I am eating anywhere between 30 and 45 gr of carbs with each meal.    Could malabsorption be an issue with why I seem to be getting to much insulin?    My endo suggested taking it after meals but that does not seem to be helping either.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.  I am so new to this and I am just trying to figure it all out.

Having lost 61 pounds so far, I have put my diabetes in remission, my blood pressure is now 90/60, my liver enzymes are all normal, and I feel fantastic.  Just hang in there, do what's required and you will be amazed at how incredible you're going to feel.

I have been experiencing the same thing although not as low as yours.  You'll probably need to eat something every few hours, if only just a bit.  I did find that if I ate something before I went to bed it helps with my fasting levels in the morning.  This goes against my rules, but eliminates that feeling of being so shaky.  I hate that feeling.  Make sure you're getting enough complex carbohydrates.

Which surgery did you have?  If you're on liquids you might need to drink milk instead of water to increase your carbohydrates.  I'm a type 2 and it took me eight months to come off insulin after a vsg.  Hope this helps

I started the 6-month plan, but had been seeing my dr and the nutritionist on a regular basis.  My WLS doc packaged the "pitch" to the insurance co as as co-morbidity issue, and at 3 months into it, the insurance co realized that my co-morbidities made me a good candidate for surgery, and they approved me.  My high blood pressure, bad triglycerides, severe sleep apnea, GERD and Type II on a BMI of 39 were all factors. Like you, the 60-80 pound weight loss will be a bonus in the process.

Bottom line, it flew for me!

Thanks for the post, Mary.  Hopefully this is temporary, and as your body adjusts your sugars will head in the right direction.  I'm going into this with my eyes open, and I know that there cases when things don't go exactly to plan.  I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you!

i had my RNY surgery on 5/4 and with my meds before surgery i was doing great blood sugar wise - like waking up with 90 and going to 70 before lunch - i was using 40 mgs of lantus plus alot of oral meds.  So i was much surprised and dismayed to find my blood sugar for the past few days post surger has been as high as 240 and has never gone below 198.  I haven't taken glucophage since the surgery but have now gone back to my other oral meds plus 10 units or so of regular insulin.  afraid to take to mu*****ase it does go low, but so far that has't happened.  i'll be contacting my doctor on monday - hopefully this is a short term problem??  alas, i've had this nasty disease for 20 years.  but it wuold be nice if it helped with the diabetes.  it was good to read the other posts to see i'm not alone with this.

I am just starting my 6 month diet requirements for my RYN that my insurance requires. I just found out a little over 3 months ago that I was a type 2 diabetic. I wanted WLS long before that therefore I am willing to jump through whatever hoops my insurance asks in order for them to approve my surgery. I see the 6 months as a tool to teach me how to eat for the future. Good Luck on your journey and stay strong.

Anyone experienced this? I have been having the low sugar symptoms (Shaking, weak, light headedness). I have been monitoring my levels for the past few days and will continue until the Dr. appointment I made for this issue. My levels for yesterday were 68 AM Fasting. I was a little shaky. Then, 2 hours after I ate breakfast, lunch, and dinner they were all pretty close 71-73. Is this normal or low? I keep getting the shakes and stuff and its freaking me out:( I should mention that I have never had sugar problems before even at my heaviest.
