I don't buy it - to lose weight, you can't just keep eating hatever, whenever. Whether he calls it a "diet" or not, you have to stick to some sort of sensible eating plan/lifestyle to lose weight and be healthy.

I am a Type 1 diabetic and did the 6 mos Dr. supervised diet. In all honesty, I wanted the surgery very badly and was willing to do what they required to obtain approval. It wasnt bad at all. I was told that they are not trying you to lose weight and be denied, but that they want to see if you can follow the guidelines and stick to a plan. Like Mishelle posted, we have to start changing our eating behaviors now, as with surgery it is permanent.
Wish you the best of luck.

I've had several friends who have told me about a book called Full: A Life Without Dieting written by Dr. Michael Snyder, the founder of Fullbar. I just found out that he is offering bonuses valued at over $200 - when you purchase his latest book in the next few days - Amazing! I just ordered it for myself as I'm ready to stop dieting and get my diabetes under control. If you're interested, Here's a link:     www.thefullbook.com/amazonpromotion.html

Has anyone with VSG experienced this?  I am about 17 months out, feeling great, but have had 2 recent episodes during increased but very mild water walking.

I am Type 1 x 29 yrs; pump x 15 yrs; VSG x 4.5 months.  I kept my pump on during surgery and turned it down to 50%; I can't remember if I put it back to 100% post op but they tested my BS 4/day and I bolused as needed; I recently dropped my basal rate because I was having reactions in  early morning.  I ate apples with peanut butter as well as using glucose tabs if I was out of the house.  My weight loss has been slow, 35 lbs so far, fat loss most definitely.  I think that using insulin has much to do with a slow loss, for me, at least.  I now only bolus before a meal if my BS is above 150.  My first A1C post op had only dropped a bit (from 8 to 7.6) but my endo figures that is reflecting pre-op time.  I am due for test in a few weeks which will be a better indicator of control.  I had considered the band at first but my endo suggested RNY but then when I learned more about vsg I decided that was going to be a good choice for me and so far I am satisfied with my decision.  I figure if this really doesn't pan out in the long run, I can also go back and have a DS or bypass of some sort.  Probably haven't help you much, but that's my story in a nutshell.  I think, also, that RNY is oushed for Type 2 DM but often medical personnel don't distinguish between the types and so they use the term "diabetes" to cover us all.

start the diet, and then try to fight the choice. If they drag their feet you will have done some time. They figure if you can't deal with the changes for 6 months, then you won't make changes after surgery. Or at least that is what i was guessing. I managed to go through the 6 months quickly. In fact what i did was 4 months, then contacted the surgeon to start the consultation. By the time I was done with the 6 months I had all the requirements in and had my sugery.

I was on liquid metformin after surgery and didn't take any of my januvia or actos at all. When my liquid metformin was gone, in about two weeks I quit taking any diabetic medication. I don't take any at all now, nor do I take any cholesteral meds. My blood sugar was 90/60 last time it was checked, my liver enzymes are normal, and they were very elevated.

I'm glad your RNY has been approved. Follow the plan to the letter, and you'll feel better than you have in a long, long time. Congratulations to you. This was the best decision I have ever made.

Hi Beth, My RNY put my diabetes in remission.  I was able to meet the requirement because I had seen a nutritionist twice within the last six months and having my A1C done every three months as well as seeing my PCP.  You may already have met the requirements if your medical records have documented your weight and your appointments.
