Topic: RE: Insulin Resistance and carb craving....(long)
If I had diabetes, and was choosing a surgery now, I would want a DS. diabetes is resolved, and long term weight loss is great.
Good luck either way.

Topic: RE: Oral alternative to metformin
hi, i'm only 5 days out and currently not on any diab. meds until i get my bearings but i also could not tolerate metformin prior to surgery and was given kombiglyze which was definitely a better choice for me (and my GI system!) . you may want to talk to your dr about it:)

Topic: RE: Needing placed on medications before insurance will approve surgery
Best of luck with the appeal. I think it's important to keep advocating for yourself as calmly and professionally as you can, and to utilize your medical team to do the same.
Topic: RE: postprandial hypoglycemia
Oh wow...gtube feedings? That is horrible. I take 100 mg acarbose at every meal. It works, but not as well as Dr Patti wants. I am currently waiting approval on an appeal with insurance for a medication they denied ocreotide injections. I am gaining weight having to eat so much all the time. I am scared that my surgery was just a waste of time and overall bad for me. I now have a continuous glucose monitor. Does insurance cover test strips for you? The script should be for 10 test strips a day 300 a month. Insurance usually needs prior auth for that many but with low blood sugars you are supposed to test every 15 minutes during an episode untill blood sugar is stable. Im glad you are geting your weight up. That is so scary!!
Topic: RE: double diabetic
I read the same thread as you so tell me how I missed any poster "surgery bashing." I see a confused OP asking for help and several other helpful members offering their knowledge & experience. They actively replied and offered up valuable info for OP clarifying facts and clear away misguided myths regarding the DS, VSG and RNY based on verifiable stats, studies. Regardless of which surgery they had I still kept an open mind and found it honest & very informative. I will be discussing some of it further with my surgeon. Anyway aren't we all swayed in one direction or the other that's why we have chosen the surgery we feel is best for us. I see you are an upcoming RNY I guess that's why you are so sensitive about your RNY choice and throwing out the bashing accusation. Perhaps with an open mind you will reread the thread and see it differently but All CAPS wasn't really needed IMO. Try to remember we are all here for information and support. We do try to use nicer ways to express a difference in opinion than typing in ALL CAPS. I wish all the best in your upcoming surgery and a speedy recovery.
** I agree that for any surgery, you need to put in the work it requires in order to have the best results as it is the same for anything one must do in life. We go forth with our best foot forward to succeed.

How is the Acarbose working? I take 75mg a meal and can't figure out if it just delays a rise. Don't have enough test strips to test enough to find out. What is your experience?
I am on a g tube and planning a reversal as soon as my weight gets to 105. After 3 weeks on the tube feedings I am up 5 pounds to 98 pounds.

I can relate. I've had type 1 for 23 years now. My A1C hovered around 10 for years. I even seizure with extreme lows. I wasn't living--I was dying slowly. I finally agreed to the insulin pump about 7 years ago. It truly saved my life!! I was so tired of being sick. I had to try something different. Please, please consider the pump. Its scary, I know, but can life-saving. I was not a good compliant diabetic patient so I got lots of lectures from doctors, but nowadays I think they are listening to their patients more. We are not perfect. We all eat differently and some of us have issues with food. Thats the reality. Before I had my gastric bypass last June, I had to work on getting my A1C down to 8. It took about 9 months of working closely with the diabetes nurses, but I wanted to lose weight so bad that I did it. I couldn't lose weight on my own and in fact gained 30 pounds without doing anything. Please look at your options in life and not give-up!! With my surgery, I've lost over 100 pounds within 9 months!! I still eat whatever I want, just smaller portions. If you need to talk more, my e-mail is [email protected]. Please take care-there is hope!!

Yes, I do meet the qualifications for surgery otherwise. It seems the medication thing is the only hold up. I am going to try to fight it because the way it is worded in our policy through my employer states > 40 BMI or > 35 to 40 with 2 co-morbidities uncontrolled by medication and/or sleep apnea which I have along with hypertension and diabetes. Wish me luck in my appeal. Getting the paperwork together now. I'm a fighter and refuse to roll over and play dead like the insurance company wants me to do. I have an appointment with my family doctor to discuss all of this next Wednesday. Hopefully we can win this!!! Thanks for your support and input.
