I got an Email when asking about DS, is this true?

Dr. XXXXXXX does not recommend the DS due the fact you will experience malnutrition, frail bones that will break very easily as you get older, and a foul smell of feces that will seep out of your skin and your mouth.  The RNY is a much better surgery according to Dr. XXXXXXXX and is the gold standard for weight loss surgery.

What is your take on this?

I think that Dr. doesn't perform the DS and wants you to have the RnY so he gets money.

Check out www.dsfacts.com to find a vetted DS surgeon that won't let stupidity seep out of his brain and mouth.

Never having any wls I would think;

The first part makes sense, I figure you could be malnutritioned if you dont supplement, I think this could also be said for the RNY as well?

lack of supplementation = frail bones later in life, can that also be said for RNY?

with the feces smell on skin and mouth- where would he get that from?

My take is that Dr. XXXXXXXX is misinformed. malnutrition is not inevitable. It can happen if one doesn't take their supplementation and protein requirements seriously, but is definitely something that can be avoided.

As for the smell of feces seeping out of your skin and mouth, I have yet to meet a DSer who had any problems with body odor. Smelling up the bathroom maybe, but not seeping through the skin. And yes, those who have had the RNY can have malnutrition issues and bathroom smell problems too!

It really is unconscionable for a medical professional to spread such misrepresentations and unfounded rumors.

 My take is that reputable surgeons of any type don't spend their time hawking their services or their opinions via email. Unless you are his/her patient, in which case, I'd still question the judgement of sending second hand information via email, instead of having a face to face discussion with his/her patient. JMO

You've pegged it about the supplements, frail bones, etc. As to the feces/odor relationship, for the most part, that is in direct proportion to what you eat. I've had the pleasure of meeting post-op DS'ers. They smell just fine.

I'm tempted to think Dr. XXXXXXX got his "medical degree" from a box of Cracker Jacks.   The DS is no more prone to malnutrition than any other WLS.  The only time we smell feces in our house is when our dog goes out and rolls in some.  If someone wants an RNY based on their personal neeeds and or preferences, more power to them.  What type of WLS one gets is a personal decision.  To avoid a DS based on the above BS by an uninformed doctor is foolish.  Personally, I wouldn't let that idiot treat me for a common cold.

I agree the guy is a moron. However, the DS does indeed have the most malabsorption of any of the surgeries (hence the awesome results)....and it's silly to deny the foul smelling stools or fact that twice a week there is a conversation on here about which air fresheners help the bathroom stench the most. Let's be honest so ppl can make informed decisions.

DS is the best surgery when comparing stats and long term results. DS patients must supplement heavily and be very proactive in their own care. DS patients must commit to money spent monthly on vitamin supplements. DS is awesome, for the right patient.

I think it is important to make the distinction between foul smelling stools and the claim by Dr. X that we have a fecal smell oozing out of our mouths and skin pores. The original post referred to the latter... which is a blatant lie.
